Got the rest if my bits to build my my leak tester today. Here's how it looks:

Here's what it's made up from:

1 metre 3mm vacuum hose
1 metre 6mm vacuum hose
1/4" female brass tee
1/4" male thread 6mm hose fitting
1/4" male thread 3mm hose fitting.
0-15 psi gauge 1/4" thread
Rubber hand pump from blood pressure monitor
45mm Expanding bung for exhaust port
38mm plug for intake.

The 3mm hose fits onto the pulse fitting on the head as you can see in the picture, 3mm is a nice fit to prevent any leaks.

For anyone who has done this test before i was wondering what pressure and time is suitable for a pilot and if you have any tips etc. Im planning on testing at 6lbs for 6mins.

I'll update the thread when I test it out.

Thanks,

David

I'm happy with the MityVac 8500 kit I bought off ebay. PVC plug for the intake, expanding plug for the exhaust, and tube to the vac nipple on the Engine. Easy.

I am curious if the tubing will leak where the gauge is placed in line. Are those the type of fittings that just press into the fitting without ferrells? I had those on my air bags on my truck and they did nothing but leak after about a month.

I hope they work well for you. I like the design.....simplistic!

Hi Rand,

Its these type of fittings:

I blanked one end of the tube and pumped it up to 10psi with the lower two fitting under water without any leak. Ill make sure and check it for leaks when i next use it. thanks for the heads up.

My homemade tester uses the push-type quick connects with nylon tubing, and its 100% leak free. We use them I'm $100k equipment, so I assumed they're good. :)

I like the tester as well. I did the retarded thing of buying a leak down tester from numb nuts at chucklenuts at aftershot motorspurts motorsports and had to rebuild the whole kit because it didn't last two tests before failing!!

Thanks Hoser, I'll see how it performs and if it works out ok i wouldn't mind making them up, just the shipping from the UK to the USA would be pricy i would imagine.

Used my leak tester today and it worked perfectly!

The Engine held 6psi for over 30mins so no problems with that.

Here's a few pictures with it rigged up.

Nice job Dave.

Looking at your Engine pics, why does the LHS front(from driver's posi) cyl to crank case stud, have twice as much NUT protrusion as the other?
Is it torqued all the way down/in?

Hi Bugeye,

I never noticed the extra protrusion, well spotted.

Its definately torqued, maybe the stud moved a little on removal.

I will removed the nut and make sure the stud is completely home.

Thanks

David
