| Post subject: | Steering Play - How Much is Too Much? |
I've got a long travel set up in the front of my Pilot. I've noticed about 1/4" of up and down play in the steering yoke. The entire shaft is moving so I'm fairly certain that it is not just a loose nut somewhere. Is this considered a "normal" amount of play or is there something that needs to be adjusted out a bit? If not, should I look into some sort of shim/spacer to take up the slack? Thanks |

If i remember right, there is a plastic (?) bushing at the base of the steering shaft that might be worn ?? It all has to come apart to replace it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, tom |

I don't remember his exact setup but I would check both ends of the steering shaft, pull the cover on top and check the nut to make sure it is tight then move to the bottom end and check the gizmo thingie that connects to the steering box... |

THe top bushing is made of what appears to be engineering plastic and the bottom bushing is a bronze alloy. If you have a lot of play odds are the lower bushing area on the shaft is wasted and replacing the bushing will not help much. Mine was like that and I shimed it. It worked for one ride (you know those temperay fixes lol). You could weld the area up and cut it down on a lathe however your probly better off buying a new shaft. I bought a new shaft and all new bushings and the "O" rig for the bottom. When I take it apart im going to install a grease fitting at the bottom so this does not happen again for a long time. |

If not, should I look into some sort of shim/spacer to take up the slack Would a 350 shaft fit into the pilot?Is it the same length,diameter,etc? if so I have 1 for you in great shape that is not worn where the shims are located and the splines are perfect.Just a thought. |

You checked the nut at the top to see if it is tight ? The 350 shaft is totally different than the Pilot. |

ok, sorry hoser.Have never taken a pilot shaft out yet but have had my nut loosen on the top of the shaft periodically, I did the same procedure as with the clutch nut and marked it after tightening,1 quick look after removing the top panel on the wheel and I can tell if it has moved/loosened.Work well for me.
