Hoser is pointing you the right direction. Check the carb for fuel first. I have seen this problem several times in the past. I bet its the tee check valve sticking and 99% of the fuel is going straight back to the tank. It is still possible to have a bad diaphram in the pump, plugged filter or petcock tubes, etc.

What my fix is to replace the Honda tee fitting with just any normal tee fitting. Next, put something somewhat restrictive in the return line(between the tee and the top of the tank). I use a very large main jet(190). That will force some fuel down to the carb. I also added an automotive clear glass filter to all my 350s between the tee and the carb so I can physically see fuel being pumped to the carb(great troubleshooting aid at a glance).

A quick test is to pinch the return line closed with small vise grips or just plug the line. Take it for a quick spin to see if its running better.

Another guess from left field is simply swap the plug. I have had tons of them that break down shortly after running them but seem fine shortly after that again. All brands too. This problem will drive you CRAZY!

My 2 cents,
Gary

I swapped the tank a while back with a gravity one. The original tank was rusted up. I double checked the plumbing per Randy's instruction- Tank to filter to pump to carb. There's a normal open tee fitting between the pump and carb with a return line to the neck on the tank. The return line has a carb jet for restriction. I've tried plugging the return line, too.

I've swapped fuel filters and spark plugs.

I mentioned before that this issue predates my Engine rebuild, and actually it started before I swapped to the gravity tank, too. So, I don't think it's a plumbing issue. I have clear line running to the carb and can see that the line is full. But I still suspected the float may have been sticking, hence the float needle swap. But it still continues after that.

When this thing dies, it just dies. No sputtering, no loss of power, nothing. Runs great, then just kaput. It runs awesome when it runs.

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. I'm just stumped. I still need to check the grounds, and make sure the carb has gas in it when it cuts off. It's been raining for days here though, haven't had the chance to check it out.

have you got a different carb you can plug in to see if this is it? How about your choke cable? is it hung up or stuck in on position? Especially if still routed to the cab of Ody??? it could be hung up in the cable somewhere even though it is all the way in????

My son has done this a few times... forgot to put the choke down after starting his old dirt bike!!!

Well, I finally got around to cleaning up the ground connections last night and it ran great. So today, I took it over to my Ody buddy's house to run it around for a bit. He's the only local guy I know with an ody- so I would have his around to swap parts if needed, but had no issues. Ran great. All I did since my last update was clean up the ground wire connection behind the seat.

(kicks self for not checking earlier)

I did swap the head, too...

No longer STUMPED!

I need to get it out for a long ride to be sure, but I think it's cured.

Hi Kevin,

I am glad to hear you have got it running again. I am near Raleigh also, where did you get your head bored? I need to find a good shop to do this as well.
