I've got a friend that suggested we put one of his sled engines in my pilot. He is an experienced mechanic and metal worker. He has a 1980 Ski Doo Blizzard 55. He thinks it is a 500cc twin (he will check and get back asap). anyone have any oppinions on this matter? I know it will lower the value of the pilot but I intend to keep the old Engine to re install it if need be, I also don't intend to ever sell the pilot so I don't care about the value.

Any thoughts on HP gains (or losses) would be appreciated as well as feasablitly of shoehorning it in. I don't want to extend the frame, is this realistic?

Thanks,

Josh

I'm sure Hoser can give you some guidance. In the meantime, here's some good reading.

Is it fan cooled or water cooled?

There is a tag on the Engine that will tell you what "type" Engine it is, what does it say
for example "type 354" or "type 454" "type 503"

Hoser,

I will have him check what type it is. It is air cooled, is being air cooled a problem. It does have a fan mounted on the side of the Engine, plus we planned on creating some air scoops to help with the air flow.

While your checking see if it has points or CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) ignition the points are hard to
keep clean on a fan cooled Engine..

I would avoid using a points Engine if you can, keeping the dirt out of the points can
be a problem.

okay, thanks hoser.

One more thing for you, do you offer your "hoser rebuilds" to the public. I've heard good things, if I don't swap engines, I may keep mine but it needs some work (loud tapping sound in Engine). I figured if I'm going to get it redone, I may as well do it right.

what do you think?

Josh

I'm guessing it is either a bent rod or a bad bearing. what do you think? The sound has been getting louder and louder. last time I started it, the sound was nearly all you could hear, it sounds like a banging or clapping sound. PNUT heard it at ECJ, he may be able to describe it better.

QUIT RUNNING IT!!!!

I would have first drained the oil to see if something is wrong in the balancer, see any metal?
that would be a clue, then I would remove the drive clutch and see if the noise went
away, if it didnt I would pull the Engine and go through it.

Take it apart don't run it any more if it is the lower rod it could damage the cases $$$
or other important parts, if you never been inside the Engine then now would be the
best time to remove it and go through the whole thing from top to bottom inside and
out.
