89' fl400r new top end (165psi), boysen reeds, everything else stock. Can turn idle screw all in and no response.

Lower pilot jet?
Raise clip on needle?
Would float level cause this?

Wondering where i should start? Thanx mike

What octane gas are you using? at what RPM would you say it is running at? Are you sure that the slide on the carb is not stuck and is fully closing? Just a few questions that popped into my head.

Stock carb? Can you get it to idle if you hold the throttle open a little or does it die?

Check to see if the idle screw isn't broken off. Take it out. Also check the slide for wear where the idle screw touches it. Also try taking the spring off so you can screw it in farther. Also make sure your air/fuel screw is adjusted to 1 1/2 turns. Hope some of these help you track it down.

Have adjusted air screw from 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Took carb apart and cleaned during rebuild.
Idle screw did not appear to be broken. Will try with spring out. thnx

no lower then 91 and if your 165 psi you might consider race fuel if you start to ping. If it idles with the air box lid off then you need to start going smaller with your slow jet/pilot jet. I keep an assortment of both pilot and main jets.

I will fill with 91 octane and try air box trick. Gunna order jet kit. It was also fouling plugs after rebuild.

Yeah your too rich. After you break in the Engine do a plug chop to dial in the jetting. Start with the idle first then mid-range then top end. Keep us posted also what are you mixing your oil/fuel ratio? 32:1 is a good spot 20:1 is too much

not sure what carb you have but the idle screw on the Keihin PWKs carbs don't raise the idle much at all even when all the way in, i think some guys cut down on the spring so they can screw it in a touch more

Follow the idle and air screw adjustment procedure outlined in the manual?

Is it too lean or is it too rich at idle?

You can play with the choke to find out, pull the choke out a little at idle, any changes? Pull out a little more note changes, idle go up or down?

put fresh 91 octane and new plug. Problem fixed. go figure

gonna do plug chops and see if tuned in

I had run 2 or 3 tanks thru it after rebuild and fouled 3 or 4 plugs using regular 87 oct.

Still using ngk br7es. Should i be using something else with the 165psi and boysen reeds?

Or is that common after new top end, till it brakes in?

Any thoughts on iridium plugs?

Idle screw working. Did plug chops.

idle - new plug - no color

mid - black and smoked alot - raised clip from 2nd to 1st groove - less smoke, better response. ran out of new plugs so no plug chop after moving clip

WOT (Wide Open Throttle) - brown

seems to be idling and running good all the way thru. Time will tell on plug fouling

87 octane?

You're joking right?

We can't buy anything under 91.

Also a few stations sell 100 octane unleaded.

Will this do my ody any harm? I've only ever tried 98 octane with a 32:1 mix. Decided to run 30:1 now, just to be on the safe side.

in the U.S. we have 87, 89, and 91 or 92 octane

whether 98 octane will harm your ody is beyond me.

i think race fuel is like 110 and some run that, so i don't see where it would hurt
