 Post subject: No idle...still
PostPosted: Tue Jul 05, 2005 7:38 pm
So now Ive got a new top end, fuel filter, fuel lines, fuel pump, plug and wire, throttle cable, and I tried 4 different carbs, done a compression check (138 psi) and hooked up the gas tank off of my running odyssey to my "project", thinking it might be bad gas, and Im still getting the same results. NO IDLE. I can get it started ok (with starting fluid) and keep it running as long as I keep reving it up. When I stop reving it, its almost as if I hit the kill switch. It just completely dies. Picture yourself riding along about 15 or 20 mph and then hit the kill switch. that's what its doing. Im running out of things to try. Maybe I'll buy a running odyssey and use this one for parts. Anyone got any more ideas? thanks

You need to keep posting under the same thread as all of your previous information may be relevent.

Points or CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) ignition?

What type of top end do you have FL250 or CR250?

Have you ever checked for leaks?

It sounds like a timing issue to me (based on your previous posts).

I got a new coil and plug wire and the spark seemed to be ok. Its a fl250 and I havent messed with the points or CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition). The timing could be off but you would think it would run rough if that were the case. Once its running and Im gassing it, it seems to run and respond to throttle ok. Im not sure how to check for leaks?

When it is running does fuel run out the over flow ports on the side of the carb? If so you need to adjust your float level.

yes, one of my carbs I tried has gas pouring out of both overflow ports. The other three carbs seem to be ok

I adjusted my floats which stopped the gas from pouring out of the overflow but it still dosent idle. The Engine is from a 1981. I removed the flywheel to see if I could adjust the timing, thinking there were points behind it but theres not. The clymers manual dosent help me much on timing. Anyone got any pointers on timing?

You replace the needle thing in your carb? That would be my next move.
