I'm thinking of adding a cooling fan . How much do they help cooling . Aren't they built for the sand and heat . The past couple of days it's been in the 90 around here and I'm not sure it can take that kind of heat . Usually when we ride its between 50 and 75 degrees . And if I don't add a fan how hot is to hot to ride .

When my oddy's were still air cooled I experimented with bilge fans. At one point we had two fans on each Engine (the max the electrical system will handle). I don't feel it was successful. I did have other issues at the time but if you think about it, an air cooled Engine requires a tremendous amount of air flow to cool it. People are just unaware of how much air flows around a dirt bike Engine that is between your legs and out front. But oddy's have the Engine behind a seat. Very limited air flow.
With regards to riding on a hot day I would just recommend you run some high octane fuel on those days. I say this because you want as much deto protection as you can get on these hot days. With premium pump gas you are probably experiencing some deto but not enough to be deadly. This would change when it gets hotter outside.
Just my opinions.

Make your own fan set up
in Oz the temps can be 35 to 40 in aussie lingo or in your temps 95 to 104
and Yes it makes a noticeable difference.

Mine is switchable. in summer it is on all the time.
I am head away for a weeks buggy riding in a months time Middle of winter
here and will still switch on the fan in the tighter slower stuff.

Here is a link to the same fan in Oz but you do a search in the US for the same
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-Inch-Radia ... 3a7d3a702f

bit of 5mm perspex cut a hole and bolt it on and your done

BUT """"""""""""""" READ THIS """"""""""""""""
MAKE sure YOU take the fan blade off and drill holes If there are none
See Pic of fan SEE RED DOTS Drill 1/4" holes evenly this will let the water escape.
Because when you wash it down water will sit and trash fan m0t0r.

Fan Works well seems ok

I don't know I haven't given the fan a pen and paper yet. LOL

Sorry door was open and I had to throw that in.

Never put a meter on it. But will put that on the list of to do's

Randman had a similar setup but it was mounted to the back of his seat.
Not sure how that turned out though but I think it worked well for him.
I know I didn't have any real success with the 3" bilge fans. Possibly to small. I chose them because the electrical draw was correct.
Edit: might be the reason he didn't melt any engines running pump gas.

The nice thing about forced air flow is when you stop your keeping air flowing over the Engine when it needs it the most for example if you climb a large hill dune what ever that is a long hard pull on the Engine then reach the top and stop or come to a crawl have seen this in group rides, series of hills heat keeps building, wide open areas like dunes you mostly keep moving all the time.

You can also go with a setup like this.....

This was the setup I made for my old Ody before I went water cooled. This way it hits both the cylinder and the head.

I like that set up with the fan behind the seat but I have to have my seat all the way back to fit in it . What kind of electrical pull are these fans drawing and were are you getting the power from if its the lites wont that dim them a lot of are rides end at nite .

I think the oddy has 13amps system. Then you have to run lights ignition etc. I ran two bilge fans at 8amps but didn't have to run lights. What ever fan you run can't be more than that and no lights. Your probably looking at 5amps. Randman said there's clearance issues if you try to have the seat back.

I bought the oddy cooling fan from that eBay seller and it moves some serious air! Easy to connect, still can get to the plug, and really easy and clean to wire.

Am I the "he" you are referring to? If so, I ran three Ody's for a while with no fan and premium pump gas. I also built three Ody's for Duneit who also ran these three Ody's in the dunes without water or air cooling. I opted to use a fan and water cooled head setups because I run the Ody's in high heat and push them through sand dunes.

I don't melt any engines nor did the three I built for Duneit burn up because they are set up properly.

The oddy cool fan on ebay is the one I was thinking of the prices is good and it looks good . But like I said I really don't want to have to give up my lights . I never read anything about anybody putting a fan on a FL250 do they get better air flow .

Anytime you can get additional air through the fins of an air cooled head and cylinder, it will help with Engine longevity.

Back in the early eighties, I used to race my FL250 on flat track. I put scoops on it similar to the FL350.
