We were posting about Randy recently and I went back over my past e mails with him and found this information he was kind enough to provide. Happy reading.

SUPER IMPORTANT INFO!

BORING INFORMATION

The 3 must do when boring a 350 Odyssey cylinder:

1. BORE .004 THOU. OVER THE SIZE OF THE PISTON BEING INSTALLED. (I would say .005 like a others but remember you only have to .008 before you are out of tolerance and have to bore it again)
2. RELIEVE THE EXHAUST BRIDGE BY CUTTING A DIVOT INTO THE BRIDGE SO THAT THE CENTER OF THE BRIDGE IS .006 TO .008 THOU. DEEP.
3. DRILL 3 OR 4 HOLES INTO THE FACE OF THE PISTON DEAD CENTER OF THE EXHAUST BRIDGE.

2. To check the depth while relieving the exhaust bridge, you put a straight edge vertically into the cyln. over the exhaust bridge. Then use a feeler gauge and you should be able to slide the .006 thou. gauge strip between the straight edge and the center over the bridge.

3. To drill the holes into the face of the piston, you will mount the piston WITH OUT RINGS onto the crank rod with just the wrist pin bearing but NO CIRCLIPS. Then using NO GASKETS, you slide the cyln. down over the piston just like regular install
When the cyln. is in place, hold a sharp pick or scribe into the exhaust manifold, on one side of the exhaust bridge with it pressed into the piston. Then rotate the piston up and down by turning the crank easily. After you get the first side marked, then mark the other side of the exhaust bridge. Then look closely into the exhaust manifold at the piston where you have made the marks and see how large a gap there is between the bridge itself and the marks you have lightly scribed into the piston, Usually it is 1/16". Now remove the cyln. and piston.
Now measure and mark the spots that you would like to drill the holes vertically on the piston face. Make sure your dead center between the scribe marks! The size of the bit can very for applications, Wiseco says .060 to .090. Normally we use a 1/16" drill bit. Wiseco calls for 3 holes but on racing buggies we use 4 or on my rebuilds & my own buggies.
Start down 3/8ths" below the rings and go aprox. 3/8ths" apart.
Now place rags into a vise that is opened far enough that you can lay the piston into it with the markings straight up. Now using a plastic mall and a center punch, lightly tap the center punch to make a small divot to use to start your drill bit so that it will not walk on you. I personally set my vise into a drill press and drill the holes. But if you can't do that then using a battery drill gently drill the holes.
IF A HOLE IS OFF CENTER ENOUGH THAT IT IS EXPOSED OUTSIDE OF THE EXHAUST BRIDGE YOU WILL NEED TO THROW THAT PISTON AWAY AND START OVER. This has happen to me so be careful!

(this picture lacks the scribe marks, this piston has been ran before I took the picture)

Now I personally add 3 dimples to hold extra oil and to help keep the face a little cooler. I use a 3/16" drill bit and just drill until the cutting edge is ready to start cutting. I stop there so I do not leave but the dimple from the end of the drill bit.

When installing the Base Gasket
Coat both sides with Three Bond 1211 Gasket Sealant to have a good seal that will pass a leak down test

When installing the Head Gasket
Break it down into 3 pcs & throw the center away. Use only one of thin outer pieces and save the other outer piece for next time.
Coat both sides of head gasket w/ K&W copper coat head gasket compound in the can w/ brush NO SPRAYS
Torque head NUTS down to 19 lbs and then to 21 ft lbs.

350: Exhaust Gasket
Make sure to coat with Three Bond 1211 Gasket Sealant to have a good seal that will pass a leak down test

MORE MISC. INFORMATION THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HELP

Wiseco is a forged piston

Honda is a cast piston
Q.What is the difference between cast ( in this case Honda) and forged pistons (in this case Wiseco)?

A. A cast piston is liquid molten aluminum poured or injected into a mold. A forged piston is made from a solid ingot and pressed or extruded into shape before machining.

Q. What piston would you recommend? Why?

A. Cast pistons are brittle and often shatter causing catastrophic Engine damage. Forged pistons are stronger to a much higher temperature than a cast piston could endure. Forged pistons dissipate heat better and run cooler than cast pistons. Forged pistons are a hi-silicon, low expansion aluminum alloy with improved cam and taper grind from computerized machining, that controls expansion to allow tighter piston to wall clearances. This increases piston stability and maximizes horsepower. A forged piston is also lighter than a cast piston because less material is needed to manufacture a strong and dependable forged piston.

Thanks,
Randy
