I would really like to clean them up and paint the springs. What tool are you guys using? I've used a couple straps before but maybe I should invest in the correct tool.

I was surprised the FL350 shocks are made by Showa.

Yup many times. What you need to know ??
Below is the unit I made.
Fronts can not be rebuilt because you can't find a seal.
Rears can be rebuilt but I have had some issue with it lasting without leaking after a few rides. Not leaking bad but leaking never the less. Have tried to modify but with no real success. It is possible to use other shocks, but if you go over the max length you will get U-Joint bind. Could use slightly longer shocks if you modify stuff. Don't want to comment on modify stuff because I have not done it myself yet but confidence is high that it will work.

I don't like those for doing springs.
If they don't have hooks on the tangs then the spring could slip off and smash your teeth out.
I actually made one of those out of pipe in the 1970's at work. We all had one. Used it to tighten chain so that you could get the master link in. Worked great and the tangs were hooked.

Here is mine from work. 1970's vintage. Probably older than you.
If it could only talk, it could tell stories.

That's a negative sir. I'm 50 going on 51 next month. I remember the 70's pretty well.

Got my vote for the bench-mount spring compressor here as well. Too many close calls with both good-quality and low-quality threaded-style spring compressors. Plus the threaded-type will kill your spring paint job.

Make a bench version out of some scrap, and then hang it on a nail in your shop as man-cave-decor.
