how do I keep the friction spring on a fl250 recoil from falling out of the friction plate

Good pic in section 8-6 of the manual.
Is the spring damaged in anyway ?? Looks like it hooks into the friction plate.

thank you, I see now. the hole for the friction spring was so full of crud it wasn't until I completely disassemble it all and cleaned it, then I found it.
