Hi all! This will be my first post, so here goes!

I recently got my hands on an fl250 challenger frame for free. It has a arm suspension in the front and independent in the rear. I'm a college student right now so money is tight, but I have a goal of putting a 570 in this frame. I guess my first question is will the reduction unit be able to handle the power?

I took apart the reduction unit because the gasket was leaking and I was gonna put a new one on. I took it apart with no issues, but some gears fell out and a washer fell out with oil channels. I put the gears and stuff in their correct places (I think) and I don't know where the washer goes. I have put it in a few spots now and have rotated the driven clutch to see if everything works. No matter where I put the washer, there seems to be a lot of resistance, and sometimes it doesn't even move.

Does anybody have a schematic of all the internals or any ideas as to why there is so much resistance? I was thinking of taking this whole unit to a machine shop to get fixed.

Welcome to the board. Sounds like a cool project.
I'd try it in different spots with out the drive chain installed. May be easier to locate and isolate the issue. Second I'd see if you could match up any wear marks scratches ect on the washer except having installed it already I doubt this will be much good.
Hopefuly someone who knows more then me jumps in.

That thrust washer looks like it goes on the primary shaft or the secondary driven sprocket.
Check section 8 of the manual as it has a picture of the gearbox.

I believe one of the weak spots on the FL250 was the chain on the gearbox and there was an upgrade made at one time. So I am thinking that if a stock 250 was an issue for this gearbox then putting a 570 in it would be asking a bit much.

The guy to talk to would be Randman as he used to race these. His opinion would be the one to seek.

The best way to find something here is to use the search box above.

Thank you guys for the tips. I got the reduction case back together and there is no resistance. It turns out the disc brake on the case is bent a little, and it rubs on the case when angled just right. I don't think that it will be a problem later on down the road.

I thought that a 570 would be a little much, I was just hoping it would be a possibility :-) . There is a Polaris indy 500 2 cylinder with 400 miles on the odometer near me for $500. Would this be a better option with the reduction case?

I don't want to really comment on that as I don't have any experience with the FL250.
Remember that these things got no suspension so it would be a handful to keep stable.
What's wrong with stock Engine you got ??

The frame I have has front and rear independent suspension, and it didn't come with an Engine. Front a arms and rear independent stuff. I think the reason I got this frame for free was cause it had no Engine lol!

Those transmissions can take a lot of abuse and quite a lot of power try keeping your setup light weight and agile that's what made the FL250 based racers fast.

Thanks for all the stuff hoser!

I definitely will start a thread once I get ahold of an Engine. Hopefully going to get one this weekend, and then I'm done with summer classes. I'll have about 2 ish weeks before fall classes start, so hopefully I'll get something going by then.

Here's the Odyssey!

I looked at some of the other challengers, and the bottom part of the frame looks a lot different than mine. Probably why I got mine for the low low price of free! Either way, I got a lot of work ahead of me. I haven't seen one like this before, so at least it's unique! :-)

I knew somebody would spot the GTO! That mini model T is something my dad got for doing a sidejob a long time ago. I don't know much about it, but if you google shriner model t, a lot of info comes up. My friend and I got it running recently and it has a 3 hp Briggs and Stratton flathead from a loooong time ago. I think you're thinking the yerf dog go kart is a drag car? I'm not sure where you got that from though. Lol!
