whats the best way to install the seals?
There are many ways to do it but the proper way is with a seal tool.
I doubt anyone has one of these laying in their shop. Basically it is a piece of round stock machined to fit into the inside of the seal and has a large flat that fits onto the outside of the seal correctly. Then you smack it or press it with a clamp.
That's not how I do it.
I am a hack n whack guy and have not had any issues ever with the way I install seals at home or at work.
1) You get a piece of steel that you can lay on the outside of the seal. Get a clamp and press it in. Everything must be square when you do it. This works fine if you can get at it.
2) The way I do it: Just get a FN hammer and "tap" the edges of the seal in a circular pattern until the seal is in the home position. You don't want the seal to go in crooked so it will require many "taps" to get it there. NO gorilla hits, use a brain. It may require a few hard taps at the very start to get the seal to take a set, but use common sense. You could use the piece of steel method above and your hammer instead of a clamp to get it started. Never had an issue doing this.
