Fl350 CV conversion shaft

I know I've posted this process before, but I'm building another shaft for methodical. With his incredible skills he can utilize this shaft to its full extent. This shaft will accept Polaris ranger front cv shafts or some other 22 spline shafts. Here is the original build thread. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14265&start=125

Once again -- great work. I can see why you don't have time to fool around with rubber Engine mounts. How did you make that cutter for the correct spline profile ??

Sorry if it's a bit out of focus my new phone doesn't like to take pictures of small things. So originally when I made this cutter I had used a lead hammer and smacked the splines on the cv shaft. This left a perfect imprint of the splines in the face of the hammer. I then used that to grind this profile cutter. The inside splines are definitely the most difficult due to the deflection and not being able to see your work.

Does your machine index for each spline or is it manual? What do you plan for heat treating? Awsome work, keep it up.

So all I did to set up the lathe as a indexer. Is turn up a hub to accept the indexing plates and built a fame to hold a alignment pin. It seems to work well. It could be a but more rigid but it think that a tiny bit of flex helps from binding the tool. It kinda has a spring action. It takes many passes to cut a spline. The heat treatment I send them out to have it done properly. Then I surface grind the bearing surfaces.

Well I will admit (and I'm not ashamed to admit) that you got more skills than I do. I use a spin index mounted on the lathe for anything I do. I am a bit crude. Yeah I can see how deflection could be an issue, especially on a long hole. So basically you hand made that cutter with a grinder and file. That's what I wanted to know. THX.

Splines can be cut on the lathe using the single point broaching technique. By locking the spindle and using a cutter turned sideways you can manually run the tool back and forth. With a profile cutter it will form the splines one by one.

After a little bit more work on the splines. I then install a Short splined shaft I made. This serves as a arbor to turn the rest. I can then turn the outside profile whal keeping it true to the inner splines.

Holy Crap. I WANT ONE. This is an amazing Idea to replace the output shaft with another shaft that will accept an OEM Type axle without crazy chopping/welding the stock axle. Any plans to sell?

I would like to sell them but due to the amount of time it currently takes to make them it would be very costly. I'm looking into other methods to lower the cost. Each shaft and hub will require over 30+ hrs to complete

Did some more work on the shaft today. Got the threads cut and splined the other side. This is the method i used to make the profile cutter. A piece of lead smashed against the male shaft creates a nice negative.

jknarfal you ever think about making a rotary broach for your lathe would be a lot faster not bad to make the main thing is the holder 1° to 2° angle SpeedChaser

I have looked into the rotary broach. I haven't found them in larger diameters. And I don't believe byou can adjust dimensions very easily. I have a 10" Lewis shaper that hopefully ill get a dividing head and start building these on.
