I have viewed a few threads on this subject, but I am still having no success in removing my axles. I am hoping someone can assist with additional input... I have separated the axles from the inboard joints. I purchased a bearing knife and tried removing the inboard joints with a 5lb slide hammer, no luck. I then tried 10lbs on the slide hammer still no luck. I have been soaking the shaft with PB Blaster daily for about two weeks. I then removed the reduction case from the frame preparing to drill one of the shafts so I could punch out the other side. When I had the case on my bench top I was able to determine that each of the inboard joints move free of each other and have about 1/8 inch movement. I initially thought this was bearing play but soon learned it was not. Further investigation revealed the inboard joints are moving independently of the final shaft. This tells me they are not locked up by rust. Is this a correct assumption? Could it be just the set rings keeping me from removing the inboard joints? If so, any advice? Heavier slide hammer?

Thanks,

Jeff

I don't own a pilot but do you have a manual ??
You can get one free here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... jBDQjl5TGs
Did you remove the clips ??
Never taken a Pilot axle apart myself though.

They can be really stubborn. It seems like you're taking your time which is good. I learned from others posts and here is what worked for me. Silicone bead around one cup with trans on its side to act as a damn/moat, fill in with PB blaster and let it sit, tapping the cup often over the next couple of days to get the penetrant in there. Mine did come out and should, read Hoser's 10 reasons why cups should be removed. Then use the slide hammer but don't go caveman. If you don't get them, back on its side refill and tap tap tap, the vibration seems to help get it in there.
Best regards

Thanks for the input guys! I think I need heavier slide hammer. I am confident the inboard joints are not seized to the final shaft. I think the stop rings or set clips are keeping the inboard joints from releasing from final drive shaft. I have confirmed that both inboard joints are moving freely of the final drive shaft.

Just an observation here but is the inboard clip (item #1) really needed ??
Seems to me no reason to have it on there. The splines would stop the travel when they get to the end and the shaft can't come out unless there is a catastrophic failure of the suspension.
I bet this clip causes a lot of headaches on removal.
Am I wrong ??

Sounds to me like the groove for the c clip is full of crap and not allowing the spring clip to retract into the groove. Keep at it with the penetrating fluid. You'll get one side out, then use a punch to remove the other side.

Are you planning a rebuild of the tranny or just changing the seals?

I believe the bearings on the input shaft are a special size and about impossible to find. Take good care of them so you can reuse.

Again take your time.

rmesser thanks for your input! I think you are correct. I am not planning on rebuilding the transmission as it appears my Pilot has low hours. I have purchased new seals and plan on changing those. I could not find an OEM seal for the right hand side. I found a seal the same size made by different manufacturer, I am hoping it will work.

Thanks again!

One time I had a set that just would not come out and here is what I did, I had to cut the cup off the axle stub, yes I cut it off leaving just the stub coming out of the trans, I then drilled a pilot hole through the shaft, working my up in size till I had about 3/4 of the stub drilled out. I them modified a saws all bit to fit into the hole and cut the remaining piece in 4 quarters, and them using a good punch and sharp chisel punched those pieces out of that trans. I then used a good sledge hammer and punch on the other side which came out no problem. Now, I had a spare axle here to it wasn't a big deal to cut that cup off and I recommend doing this only in last ditch effort as your going to ruin a end.
good luck!!!!
