I have a spare transmission that came with a bunch of spare parts that I bought a couple of years ago.
Today I decided to take it apart and just have a look. I knew something not right when I see a seal missing and the shaft turns but jams up LOL. Anyways pics below show the classic AB damage when the bearing blows. This is the bearing that can blow when you rev it in the driveway all day long. These transmissions are a splash lube system., but the oil level is nowhere near the bearing. I over fill my transmission and you will see in the pics that I put a tie wrap down the fill hole. The measurement shows where if you over fill your trans it will be at the bottom of the AB gear bearing. I run at the 5" level. You can decide if you want to over fill your tranny. In my opinion that damage could have been fixed if the gear wasn't missing teeth. If one tooth was broken it would have been fixable but not every tooth chipped and broken. I do remember a thread where a member said the AB bearing was the same as a bearing they use when rebuilding a corvette ZR1 transmission, but he did not hang around long enough for us to ask him which bearing it was. I did a lot of looking around when that post came out and I believe it could've been a bearing for the reverse gear. I think that because he said his buddy didn't use that bearing during rebuilds and so gave them to him. Not sure on all this though.

File comment: snap ring holds in bearing and must be removed

File comment: This shows the tie wrap pushed down the fill hole 6"

File comment: The 4" mark is actually level with the bolt hole for the rear transmission mounting bolt. It is level with that opening at the bottom of the fill hole. No you can not see the oil level from the outside.
