You can cut right hand threads if you turn your lathe bit upside down and run in reverse.
This then cuts a right hand thread with the cutter running toward the tail stock. No danger to hit the head or a shoulder.
That's what I did in this project.

I've since added reverse, but originally you would have had to twist the belt hanging from the line shaft..lol This lathe was originally driven by a water wheel in a river, it was upgraded to an electric-motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) in 1914. I still have that motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )), and it still works.

The picture below shows a line shaft system Image from google. See how some of the belts have a twist in them? That reverses the machine it's driving.

Yeah we have come a long way since those days but when I look at old equipment I just see genius.
Our forefathers were not so dumb.

The quality of cast iron was better back then too.

This clutch is on my brothers machine now.
We went for a ride today and it ran awesome. My brother is very happy with it.
