Hello
I have been running “race fuel” for years in the small engines and caged toys because I don’t use them very often... not for the performance. They run just fine on pump, but left to sit provides you with the dreaded jet clog. Sunoco no lead in 5 gallon cans a couple times of year was secured. Bull knows the limitations of the east coast riding scene.
I’m curious about avfuel, my issue, can’t find an airport willing to sell it.
This is surprising given the amount of small airports in my area. I’m not familiar with the distribution restrictions if any... something tells me there might be many.
C.O. I’m trying to drink the kool-aid but know one will fill my glass. :-)

I used to think av gas was designed to run at high altitudes, and therefore thought it was bad to run it at or around sea level. C/O learned me though..lol

As I understand it, it's just a high octane leaded gas. I would think you'd be able to get sunoco race fuel with lead?

If I remember correctly, av gas is about 100 octane. I believe sunoco sells a 110 leaded race fuel.

Thanks for the reply. I have no desire or need for lead. I did not know avfuel was leaded. My interest comes from the price point. 5-6 bucks a gallon vs the 14 per or so with Sunoco.

There is a ''low lead'' version of av gas, but I suspect the lead is why C/O recommends using it. It's a good upper cylinder lubricant, and it probably helps protect the Engine in the event of an accidental lean condition. I'm pretty sure there's no ethanol in it either.

I don't want to speak for C/O, these are just guesses..lol

I have been using Avgas in my toys for 35 years, yes it does have lead in it, at least it used to, I have never had issues running the Avgas, for me it is just a cheap alternative to race gas to prevent detonation.
I don't tune my toys to the edge either, they don't foul plugs and they don't burn pistons, that is the sweet spot :) I don't worry too much about cool weather vs hot but I can tell when it is cool the Engine is happier.
I buy at local airports, maybe call around to explain what you are using it for, Avgas doesn't have road tax so it would be illegal to run in your car, if explained that you are only using in an off road vehicle, I would think you could find someone to sell it to you, if all else fails, most of the airports around here have self serve for the aircraft that come in on off hours :)
