Figured I would share the seasonal updates getting my machines ready for the wet hardpack. Here in CA we don't really ride in the summer because the dust is unbelievable and the fire danger is insane. Once first rain hits it's all good though.

I'm working on all 3 machines at various capacities.

The FL250 is in the process of receiving new mounting hardware, u joints, and bearings all around.

Up next for this machine is new tie rods and tires all around.

The FL350 is getting shock savers, tie rods, and LED light pods.

And lastly, the FL400 Engine is at CW Racing having the bottom end re-done. This machine also needs a new battery and maybe some new CV boots soon. (Can someone tell me how to replace these boots?)

Anyone know where to get reliable u joints for the 350? I'm thinking they're about due for a replacement.

He didn't mention anything about it, but I also didn't ask. He did mention he has your Engine and another guys on his bench right now though.

Edit: I am having trouble finding the FL350 u-joint replacement PN thread. And also looking for FL400 CV boots and how-to on that as well

Thanks!

I don't really know the extent to be honest. There was water in the bottom end from the previous owner and when you turn the crank you can hear and feel rust. So whatever that means!

The top end looked fine to me however, but I left it with him regardless.

Axle service is not really that hard on an FL400. Best to remove the axle if you can, but you can leave the last part attached to the tranny if it wont pop out.

If I recall, the OUTTER axle boot cant be replaced without detaching the inner first, that is; remove the shaft from inner-to-outter. You cannot replace just the outer boot without removing the inner, so make sure you have new for both the inner and outer.

Best remove the wheel, suspension, and knuckle of the axle you are servicing. Remove obviously the large nut holding the axle to the hub. When you have the knuckle off; inspect/replace bearings and seals as well.

Takes 2 hours. Get a snap ring pliers, and also a CV boot clamp crimp tool. If you break a clamp, don't worry - Napa sells very high quality, strong universal sized boot clamps for just a few bucks.

FL350 u joint number is 9951-22 from powertrain industries. You'll need to reuse your hardware from the old axle. I think they're about $25 from them directly.

I can definitely relate to winter being riding time :-)

Excellent info in here, but I gotta ask, where did you get your shock savers? Did you make them? If so, do you have the dimensions?

My Works are still pending, but I absolutely want some shock savers for my rig before they go on. From your photos, it looks like my tank holder lower mounting ubolts are in exactly the same spot.

As far as the replacement u-joints, of those that have done it, have you had issues with vibration post-install? I have a set for mine, but I'm holding out till they are absolutely needed. When I did my rebuild they seemed fine at the time.

The straps are 16" from Summit Racing. The rest if pretty straight forward, but make sure once you're done you remove the shock and cycle the wheel from lowest to highest point to ensure the straps are at the correct length. If they bind during travel they will blow a u joint.

Thanks for the info on the shock savers!

We're heading into day 2 of steady rains here in PHX, you get your rains yet?

Kinda bummed, not a fan of mudding per se :-) Nice change of scenery around here though, all dreary out.

Personally I love the wet weather. With CA being nothing but clear blue sky 6 months a year it's actually refreshing to have clouds. Wet weather to me means freedom. We are scheduled for some snow soon which is fantastic.

Here's the forecast for the week. Keep in mind we have seen ZERO rainfall this year...so needless to say this is exciting.

Once the storm clears, it's play time...for a long time. :-)

I'm still interested in trying the sand paddles in the snow.

I remember last year someone made ski attachments to replace the front FL350 wheels.

Edit: Anyone remember what post that was? Can't seem to find it. Someone took the skis from a snowmobile and made a bracket so they bolt to the front FL350 hubs.

We were warned of a wet, rained race track at Northam Speedway a few years ago.
It got cancelled.
Here was my solution/mod for Neil's ex LT500.Image

There are kits online that you can buy to convert you ATV with skis. Click the link for 4/110 bolt pattern & click the photos and you'll see it is just a metal bracket.

I have thought about it & maybe one day I'll give it a try.

I need to finish this track project first. We just had our fist snow so it's crunch time.
