I recently acquired a stock fuel tank for my fl350.

The Good: The tank I got visually looked good. Just a little surface rust and scrapes on the outside. The inside of the tank looked clean (rust free). Came with the stock cap. Also, it was only $20.

The Bad: There was a 1/2in diameter hole drilled next to where the petcock should be that appeared to be the new fuel pickup. There was a line that went down to the bottom of the tank from this hole (pictured). The line was previously glued to the tank, but the seal of the glue was broken by the time I purchased it.

There was no petcock, it was replaced with the adapter pictured below and was being used as a return line. The original pickup lines inside the tank were also removed. The fuel pump that was on the tank was a duel output pump, Mikuni DF-62-702. One output going to the carb, the other back to the tank (where the petcock normally is).

Questions:

Why would a single carb Engine have a duel output fuel pump?
(I bought the Polaris fuel pump that I have seen CO recommend in other threads, just curious as to why a duel output was being used)

Has anyone ever had their stock pickup lines replaced? Is that even possible?

Is my best option to continue to run a line down to the bottom of the tank for fuel pickup? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
4Runner

If I'm understanding you correctly, the fuel pump pictured is NOT a dual output pump.

The three hose connections are 1. fuel in, 2. fuel out, and 3. pulse line to operate pump. The three way valve will return fuel to the tank.

If it was me (for $20 investment) I would split the tank so it could be brazed back together. This would allow access to the reserve and main pickup lines. Allow you to repair the hole, and allow you to get the correct valve installed.

If you have a oxy acetylene torch, brazing is actually easy. Clean the tank to bare steel and get some brazing rod with flux on the outside.

obviously you need to be safe with fuel fumes and a open flame. I would flush it with water really well, before I split it open.

Just my opinion.

The pick up tubes are nothing magical. The main is up higher than the reserve which is close to the bottom. Brake line would work well.

Didn't CO take a 350 tank apart?

The fuel pump is a dual output, but was not being used as a dual output. It has the 2 lines at the top of the picture for fuel out, one on bottom for fuel in, and the one on the left for pulse. The PO of the tank was sending one of the output's back to the tank. It looks like the link you attached, they were using the same fuel pump but were using a "Y" or "T" to tie the two outputs together. Either way, I am going to use the Polaris fuel pump with a single output.

I will look into brazing. I have not done much fabricating/metal work, but more than willing to experiment. Thank you for the input!

Sorry - I missed the 4th barb. I for one would love to see the rebuild of this tank. If you do it please post your progress with pictures.

You will need some screens for the pickup lines.

Something like this perhaps.

I am running the same fuel pump and yes it is a dual output I just run a y connection. It’s probably over kill but I can never seem to get CO’s recommend 4.5 oz in 10 seconds. But my starter doesn’t spin as fast as his.
