Greetings all, I just picked up an FL350 today. Its an 85, but looks as though it is only 2 years old in my opinion. The seat is perfect, the decals and plastic is shiny, everything works, except the parking brake cable is frozen in the off position, its completely stock with no modifications at all. I paid $3000 for it. I guess my first question is, did I get hosed? I saw this thing a instantly fell in love with it, I probably would of bought if it ran or not, but surprisingly even the electric start works and it fires on the first pull of the string if you use it. The guy I bought it from told me he bought it for his girlfriend, but she seldom rode it. So it just sat in his barn for a while only getting ridden a couple times a year. I considered buying a quad, but I saw this on craigslist and jumped on it since it was only 30 miles from me. Anyways, questions I have are

Did I get hosed on price?
Guy I bought it from said use 32/1 mix ratio cause its faster, but on tank says 20/1 oil ratio?
Where is the VIN located on the frame?
What type of oil do you put in the gearbox?
At idle it revs high and sometimes grinds going from N to F or R, is this normal?
What wear items should I look for since it is 25 years old?
And lastly what did these sell for new in 85, as I heard they were overpriced hence why there are not many around?

Thanks guys, pleased to meet ya..........

If it's in as good of condition as you say it is that sounds alright to me, they hold their value quite well.

Yes use 32:1 with a premium sythetic

Where is the VIN located on the frame?
VIN is stamped on the bar in the rear of the frame (right above tranny)

I think i put a 30 weight in mine mixed with a little gear oil to help it climb.

MAKE SURE YOU don't HAVE AN AIRLEAK. perform a leakdown test. crank should hold 10 psi for 7-10 minutes easy.
if you lean it out you will hole your piston. do plug chops the grinding is normal i suggest you short out your reverse switch(it prevents you from starting ody in gear, forces you to start in nuetral) also.. get and EGT for exhaust gas temp will save your Engine

Bearings. go though entire motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )).. perform compression test. check plugs often.

I was born in 86.. no clue! LOL

get yourself a manual, just do a search, and you can download one. They all grind going into gear, sounds horrible, but that's how they are, just be firm when you shift or they will just grind more.

Check your sparkplugs, and that will tell you about your jetting. If its running fine, don't get to carried away with wrenching on it. Trust me, every little job you do on it will lead to another. Read the info on this site, before you start tearing anything apart, then when you are more comfortable with it you can do a fair bit to it in the offseason.

Oh and welcome, and need pictures of your new rig.

The 20-1 sticker held true in '85, but todays synthetic 2 stroke oils are much better so 32-1 ratio will work fine but has nothing to do with how fast it runs!
Have you ever owned a 2 stroke Engine? Don't worry I never had one until I bought my Ody in 2006... There is a lot to learn if you have never had one... I had never even owned a motorcycle so I had a lot of catching up to do!
Pictures... We all love pictures around here...

Idle what are you calling fast? Sometimes you can blip or tap the idle/throttle and the gear change wont be so rough
listen to some ody or pilot video's on youtube and compare what yours sounds like to those... Make some video of your also! You know how visually excited guys can be LOL

Thinks to look for are rotted fuel lines... easy to replace bad if leaks develop!!!
carb boot... look for cracks in rubber between carb and motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? ))
fuel pump has a hose coming to it from the backside of the clutch, make sure it is secured, might have to pull clutch to get to it!
Someone has a free manual available for download! It will be your bible! I was amazed at how thought out and made these things are!

The price thing, yea you did good if it's as clean as you say! The pilot was the one that didn't sell well... I think the 4 year gap between the 85 odyssey and the pilot had something to do with that???
Welcome!

I remeber talking to the guy you bought this ody from. I offered him 2300 for it 2 years ago and he wouldn't budge! If this is the ody from your county pa. Nice looking ody if it is. He even had the previous owner do the oil balancer vent mod. Good luck with that ody its a beut.
