Steve, It's great you've found some time to work on your pilot! It's looking great. I know you're just amp-in to drive this thing!

I am redoing my steering setup, here are some pictures of my first attempt at centering my inner tie rods to gain a little more out steer.

I had to extend the steering shaft where the inner tie rods mount, the inner tie rods were hitting the steering column at full turn.

Here are some pictures of the completed steering shaft, I have to extend my inner tie rod mount at the pivot but the center I think I have pretty much figured out or I should say I hope, seems like there is always something hidden that does not show itself right off.

I do have one big problem, I spoke to soon when I said that the tie rod ends had enough articulation for the travel I have, well they do not. I looked at turning the inner one sideways but it does not have enough articulation for the turn of the wheel. I am going to get more accurate measurements tomorrow but as it stands I have about 1/2 to 1 inch more travel then the tie rod ends will allow, they are fine with the wheel straight but at full droop with the wheel turned in I get tie rod end bind and at full compression with the wheel turned out I also get tie rod end bind. When I say full compression I mean the bumper crushed.

I am thinking that I will be better off having no bind at full droop then at full compression, I do not think I will run into a situation where I am at full turn and full compression at the same time, I think the chances of me being at full turn and full droop at the same time are a lot higher. Thoughts anyone?

If anyone knows of an outer tie rod I can get more articulation from I would appreciate the information. Mine are 1/2 x 20 studs.

Steering looks good! I recently had the same issue with my outer tie rod binding. I was able to fix the issue by using a larger heim joint with high misalignment spacers. I think they would work for your application as well. You would probably want to use a 3/4" or 5/8" heim and the high misalignment spacers would reduce it down to 1/2". if you have to stay with the 1/2" studs they have 1/2-20 heim joints w/high misalignment spacers but you would be reduceing to 3/8" at that point.

Hello Sir, thank you very much for the help, Methodical was also kid enough to point me in that direction.
As it turns out I have some 1/2 to 3/8 high misalignment spacers, I compared them to the outer tie rod ends I am using now that have the stud built in and they both have the same amount of articulation.

Thank you again for the help.

Take care, Steve.

Hello, OK well the steering has been fun indeed. The inner tie rods work great (pivot to column), I had some trouble with bind on one side but a small spacer took care of it.
It has taken a lot of work but I have the left front all together and with 0 bind on the tie rod ends at full droop and 1/16 to 1/8 inch. of tie rod end bind at full compression, it is hard to lift the wheel by hand so as to feel the bind and measure it at the same time, I need a second person to be more exact but 1/16 to 1/8 inch. is very close. I am going 13.5 inches up from shock on full droop to check bind at full compression, 13.5 inches is with the shock bumper compressed so when I say I have bind in the last 1/16 to 1/8 inch. what I mean is at 13 3/8 to 13 7/16 up I get tie rod bind with the wheel turned out only not straight. I am going to run it here until I can find something that will work better, I think it will be OK or I should say I hope so, I think the chances of me being at complete full compression in a turn are a whole lot less then full droop in a turn, I hit full droop all the time with the big whoops we have here.

Here are some pictures, again the left front is done the right front is not. I took pictures of the left front at full turn right and left, I want to compare it to my wife's stock pilot but I think I have more turn radius then hers.
The right is not going to be fun but I am hoping to have it sitting on the ground with steering for the first time tonight. After that I need to build steering stops, I am putting them outside of the tub area rather then inside, I can see no reason not to.

Take care.

"We don't need no stinkink steering!"

No idea if my steering binds at full lock or not?

Steer with the throttle! :-)

Hello, here are some pictures of my progress. It took a lot of work but my steering is fixed, no tie rod end bind.

The first picture is just a hint of the work it took to fix my steering, the next picture is the second to the last trip to my friends for welding, no shocks on the front at full droop.

The rest of the pictures are of final assembly which I am working on now.

Take a look at my foot tub, steering stops on the outside, no cuts. I used a heat gun and molded it in to place, I am very happy with how it turned out.

Scpilot66,

Nice work on steering, one thing that jumps out at me is the double stacked inner tie rods. Is there a way to put that bolt in double shear, like the FL350? There is going to be some force transfer to that bolt and with the power steering isolating those forces to the yoke it might cause problems down the road.

Ak

Hello, that is a very good point Sir. I will put that on my list of things to do down the road a bit, I will keep a very close eye on it until I can add some support to the upper bolt.
The bolt I am using is a 1/2 grade 8.
Where I extended my pivots, I left the outer tie rod end mounts where they were, I extended where the inner tie rods mount, I think that by doing this the load will be transferred some to the pivot bearing, where as having my outer tie rods even with my inner tie rods the load transfers directly. I also left extra weight on the end of each pivot to help absorb the force. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE OR AM I JUST CRAZY?

Thank you very much for your very good input and for taking the time.

Take care, Steve.
