I built a 64" x 40" red oak dining room table for my house. This is what I've been working on in my shop instead of buggy stuff. Wife found a farmhouse style table at PotteryBarn, but the price was WICKED HIGH like....$2k without chairs! So I built one for $650 and bought $350 of chairs. Also acquired a 6.6" joiner, 13" planar, and a commercial Craftsman table saw (my motivation for building a table, ha!) in the process.

Picked up some "real" red oak from a sawmill in SE Michigan and learned #1) it ain't cheap and #2) it ain't light.

Found some plans online, but needed a custom size to fit our fining room nook. So I drew one up in Pro/E.

In my spare evenings/mornings when kids were asleep or busy having fun, I managed to find enough hours to make this thing happen. The results were well worth the work & $$! A happy wife makes a happy house. :-)

File comment: My original cad design. Only changed the gussets because my band saw didn't have enough @ss to cut arches in 2" thk oak.

Awesome job dude! I like heavy tables.

I used to do a lot of woodworking, but not so much lately.

Did you glue up the top or is that a purchased part?

Looks great. Love the finish. What did you use to clear coat?

The top I got at Lowes. It's a 1.75" thick piece of butcher block in Baltic Birch. I trimmed to length and sanded the snot out of it.

It's "high build" clear gloss polyurethane by minwax.

Added...
Each coat dries for at least 24hrs. Then I go over it with a #000 steel wool, let it sit another half-day (in case I uncovered any partially cured poly), tack cloth it clean, and apply another coat. Used 69-cent 4" wide foam brushes. If you rush poly-u, it can get "cloudy".

Then every couple years, you can go over it again with fine wool like #0000 and it will look like new again with a coat or two of poly-u. The stuff is tough, but still have to keep hot pots/pans off of it.

Beautiful table, nicely done. I'm glad the gussets ended up the way they did.
I rustic piece like this doesn't need no stinkin :-) flowy curves or bends.
Strong straight wood ( Baz. ) is how it should be.
Very very nice.

Thanks for the kind words, gents!

Perhaps I can sit at this table and imagine myself working on an actual buggy project again!?!?
