Anybody been here before, looking at the pics it looks like a 2006 must do ride trip..

its cool but not THAT cool , actually its a nice place to camp and stay a while, big, huge wide open terrain , the one sand hill is cool but nothing special

I've been there and would have to agree with Hare, good camping, not much for riding.

The area is just west of the "Salton Sea". Check a map, there is a good sized hiway that runs south off I-10, east of Palm Springs that is between the area and the water.

For anyone coming from the east, this is actually farther than Glamis or Dumont, both of which are much better riding areas.

I liked cursing the sand washes on the 3 wheeler. Tapped out and snaking back and forth. The mud/clay soil can be real dusty when traveling with a group. Usually a quite place to camp and ride (12+ years ago). There is one sand hill by the entrance and a few pocket dunes out in the mud flats but not so much sand. Personally I would rank it above the Badlands in IN.

That is one of the places I rode the ATC250R after Thanksgiving. Like they said, it was fun, but very dusty. Its not far from Glamis and Gordons wells, I think.

67.05 miles from Glamis. It's actually a litle less as the calculation is to the old train station at Glamis which is the eastern end of Hwy 78.

If you going to ride Ocotillo, drive another 60 and come play in the biggest sandbox in the US.

Brawley has free potable water and dump station.

That's our primary riding area now for weekends since Glamis is so crowded. We're probably there once or twice a month from Oct to May-June.

You really need to get away from the "regular" places to get the whole experience. The badlands to the south of highway 78 are our favorite place and 95% of the areas riders never even go there. Major canyons, gulleys, switchbacks, etc. another option is the far north of the park which is all canyons.

The trip from Ocotillo Wells to the Superstitions is always a fun trip too, but you'll need to carry extra fuel as it's about 15-20 miles one way.

Thanks for posting the pics not often you see that many 250's in one place like that
fact is I think some old racing photos was the last time I seen that many together.

Looks like plenty of places to explorer their.

No problem, I've got tons of pictures, just not very many here at work.....

Almost every canyon picture in the link you gave is of the badlands south of highway 78. There one multiple "S" canyon in there with about 15 to 20 switchback turns where you can get 10-15 feet up the walls of the canyon as you're going through it, just need to have someone on the other side to keep others from coming at you while you're doing it though....

They still make a piston for the 300 kit?

Guy on the 3 wheeler board said Kustom Kraft still has the big bore 295 kit not sure what
piston it uses.

I've now got three 300R jugs, NOS STD bore, fresh 0.25 bore and an unknown (but was told it only had a few hours on it, the owner didn't even know it was a 300R.....).

I've also picked up two or three NOS pistons off eBay in the last two years, a STD and 0.25 I know for sure, can't remember what the third is or if I even have it. Rings too.

I'm always looking for the pistons, haven't seen one in at least six months though.

Ahh the memories, my first ride on an Odyssey was in Ocotillo Wells. My family owned 160 acres adjacent to the airport just to the east. They sold it a number of years back to the state, but I bet the trees are still there.

I think its a great place to ride if you know where your going. Been way too many years for me to recall exactly where to go and how to get there, but I know there are some fun times.

Anyway, back off memory lane.

Spent the day at Ocotillo Wells on the 5th. Took 2 pilots and the kids yerf-dog. There was a bit of wind and a nice sand storm that lasted for about half an hour of zero visibility out near shell reef.

Got in 6 hours seat time over 2 rides and about 40 miles, pretty good considering the limiting factor was the kids yerf-dog (dog being the key word here.....).

That aluminum tank on the wife's ride, is that a replacement for the stock tank. or an extra tank that feeds into the stock tank???
I want to eventually put an extra tank on my pilot, but am not sure how to plumb it in so I have more range... Probly a little 3.5 gallon tank...

yeah I can see how the yerf would slow you down,what is that,6.5 horsepower model?
My buggy addiction started with a yerf,the 150 cc model.Then moved up to 250cc,now have the fl350.one day i hope to be a pilot :)

All three of ours came that way, tanks are plumbed straight to carbs and until last weekend we'd never had an issue. Wife's pilot started overflowing when idling or turned off while the gas was on. I noticed it while stopped for a break while riding and planned to pull the bowl and inspect when we got back to camp, but by then it had stopped.

I pulled the air filter and looked for signs of sand since I'm still not running the prefilters, but found none so I chalked it up to a gummed up needle and seat from oil residue since the wife had not run the last rides fuel out before it was put up many months ago. If it happens again I will adjust the float first and replace the needle and seat if that doesn't do the trick. The other two have never exhibited this problem and besides the modification to the fuel tanks these pilots have never been wrenched on by anyone other than me.

The aluminum tanks were originally plumbed into a tee inserted into the fuel line loop coming out of the top of the stock tanks so you could top the stock tanks off and extend your range. Previous owner had left them on a flatbed trailer uncovered for 5 years with empty tanks........ All three tanks are rusty inside and I've been meaning to pull em to clean and plate or kreem them if I have to.

We are planning on going back out between Christmas and New Years for a day or so, hopefully by then I'll have the tanks out, but I'm not holding my breath....

It is, been going there since '79, practically no one there last weekend too, maybe a few thousand at the most which is nice when you're driving in a pack and going "dog" slow.

Place is also riddled with volcanic rocks and calcite deposits which kept the kids busy for a while collecting, funny how so much of that always gets "accidentally" left behind.

Next trip we are going to find the canyon that was used to film the final scenes of the X-Files movie, it's slightly north of the pumpkin patch. South of hwy 78 there's a private lot and runway where some bay area mogul stores his WWII aircraft parts, bomber bodies and Korean era jet parts out the wazoo. Last time we ran by there they were working on a B26 they flew in that morning, they landed it in the wash right out side his property, like to see them do that with todays aircraft.

I was thinking of doing the same, but need to figure out a way to use a back flow preventer, so I can fill both tanks. Once filled I want to be able to not have to get out of the seat and just ride... Some of the Races I am hoping to go to are pretty long, and I hope to have close to the same range as the UTV's... If I have to stop, get out and "pump" gas from the round tank to the stock tank I would loose lots of time...
I thought of using a tee from the ody/pilot put have not wanted to cut into the return line and ruin it without knowing if it would flow...
Thanks for the pic's! It has rained for weeks here and I really needed to see some desert!!!
There is a new travel center I have stayed at a few times and wanted to unload and go explore near there!!!
