Removed both axles while removing the transmission and suspension, both axles will have the boots removed, cleaned, inspected and the CV lube changed.

UPDATE

Took both axles apart for inspection, I marked the parts with a yellow paint pen to keep them separated.

As found inside pictures.

Used a full roll of paper towels and two and one half 20oz cans of brake cleaner... What a mess CV's are now I understand why when shops get a automobile with a bad CV boot they just sell the customer a rebuilt axle assembly, most the time its actually cheaper than them taking it apart cleaning and installing two new CV boots.

Former owner/owners must have been all about the 'look' they spent no time on maintenance or attention to details.

Still gotta clean and inspect these then round up a few Honda CV boots think I have a few good used pairs to install, might also have the CV grease in stock.

Also need to paint the stub shafts and axles so they wont rust.

Wow that one looked rusty, good think you tore into them,I also noticed the spline c clips, one looks bigger diameter than the other, some one posted about this earlier and that they are different part numbers at Partzilla...

Yup parts in the CV that were not in metal to metal contact are slightly rusted this is what happens when you run the CV boot with a clamp missing and or does not fit and seal up the boots, still evaluating the parts before I break into my spare CV parts box I think the only rust damage is to the not contact areas in the CV, not a problem, took a break and while setting in a chair with a piece of 3M pad removing the rust in the stub shaft.

YES their was two different size clips offered by Honda I have both sizes in my parts box I will measure these see if they are the same or not and if they are the right ones, they felt good/right when I removed them from the trans, one of the spare parts that came with this Pilot was another stub shaft so who knows if it was from this Pilot or one of the other 3 Pilots he owned, its a good spare of another discontinued part :-)

Hoser, do you see any problem with using 1 cv cup with the small clip and 1 cv cup with the bigger clip?

That was not cv grease in those cups, It is no wonder they look like that. Cv grease I recommend is sweptco, I use it in all my race cars with great results. The crap they put in boot kits is just that, crap!! but yours had regular wheel bearing grease by the looks of it, A BIG NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Real suprised they did not burn up. With more wheel travel and more axle angle they would have! Good ol ATV saved that one with the piss poor set up LOL Did you see how far whe wheel dropped when you removed the shock??

Yeah when I was taking it apart I removed the right shock and pushed down as far as it would go measured then raised it as high as it would go and got 12-1/4" I didnt bother to check the other side as I reassemble will check it again also will remove the springs on the rear shocks and try it again to see what the travel is.

I used the Sta-Lube - Constant Velocity (CV) Joint Grease "lithium base grease fortified with molybdenum disulphide and polymers" never heard of the sweptco before, does not surprise me to see grease in the CV's that's what the Honda manual tells you to use :-) Helps when you keep the boots sealed up correctly.

What bands do you use? Cant use the Honda OEM bands on the axle end because the stay away axles are smaller in diameter than the Honda axles so never are tight enough, looks like I need to find some universal kit type...
