Has anyone ever put a grease fitting in the axle carriers between the bearings on the pilot ?

Yes - just drill and tap a hole, insert fitting. The grease fills the void and helps to keep crap from entering. The bearing are sealed (at least mine are) so the grease does not help lube the bearing. I can attach photos if you want.

I have done the same mod with great success as well, it really does keep the water and grime out of there!
