On my pilots I noticed they both have some steering wheel play, one of them has newer tie rod ends and the other one does not, the one that has the older tie rod ends has slightly more play, obviously. How often do you guys change your tie rod ends? What is acceptable play?

Yup -- have run into this before.
When it comes to play in the steering you really need to eye ball your steering rods on BOTH ends to be sure.
When my brother and I were going crazy with these things a while back we noticed that sometimes the wheel end came loose, even though it had a castle nut and cotter pin. That's the first thing I would check. Next would be the rod ends at the end of the steering shaft. You will most likely find these are actually bent a bit (ours were). Only eye balling these things will you be sure if they need replacement. I don't own any pilots but on the FL350 the rod ends located at the end of the steering rod are left hand threaded. I am having trouble finding these as they're metic 10mm and left hand thread. Current during the Christine rebuild I have found that ALL of my rod ends on ALL machines I got are shot and bent. I think it was speedchaser that made a die to "recondition" a rod end that he was working on. Mine are to far gone and actually egg shaped (ALL of them  ). I will need to find a supplier before next riding season in April.

Tie rod ends are fairly cheap and readily available. If they have play I'd replace them. I do not like loose steering. Make sure you examine the holes they bolt to as they could be out of round. Also check the steering shaft for play at the lower bearing. It is common for this to be worn on both the shaft and the bearing. A guy made a extended bearing that will reach up further onto the shaft were it is not worn. If your shaft is worn you could weld around the worn are and have it turned down to the correct OD. I did that on my FL250.

Hard to beat $23.00 delivered for a complete set. $32.40 from Service Honda, does not include nuts, cotter pins or shipping.

Extended bushing...

You can also add a grease fitting to the steering shaft housing for service.

You can also hoserize you tie rods by adding a pipe between the threaded ends and welding at each end.

Oh ya - there's also a upper bushing. kinda like a grooved rubber bushing. No 4 below. It could also be shot. Those are hard to get OEM. Perhaps a plastic bushing could be made.

I think that the steering shafts have a little play in them and I remember several years back trying to install the extended bushing in it and having a really hard time getting it to go all the way up in so I just decided to install the other steering column in it. But honestly I’m curious if I had all new tie rod ends would the little bit of slop in the steering column even be noticeable.

I noticed it on my fl250 going over bumps. But that is a a 77 fl250 with crappy front shocks. All you do is try it and see what you think.

I am going to argue with you about the steering rod ends being available. They are not. On the fl350 Hondapartswarehouse shows not available. One end is but the other is not. I bet the pilot is the same.
