| Post subject: | Exhaust springs vs bolts. |
Wanted to spark some discussion. Some exhausts are bolted to the exhaust manifold or directly to the Engine and then have the pipe soft mounted to the frame.... Yamaha Raptor 660 as an example. The odyssey has a different setup, springs initially at Engine with cushioned hangers attached to the frame, vibration... I'm guessing thickness/integrety of the pipe is the reason. 2 strokes tend to be thinner and the 4 strokes are thicker. Thoughts, insights? Regards. |

The way I see it is if the exhaust is bolted to the Engine then the vibration has to move both and that would put a lot of stress on the bolts and snap them off. A movement of an 1/8" at Engine is probably 1" by the time it gets to the end of a pipe. I don't like this idea. |

The Ody's design of springs and rubber mount is to prevent the mounting brackets on the expansion chamber from cracking. I had to re-weld the side mounting bracket on a DG expansion chamber because I didn't allow for enough movement of the expansion chamber after mounting. Note that when you examine most of the rubber exhaust mounting brackets on Ody's they are usually torn and or cracked. Watch the Engine's excessive movement after shut down right before the Engine completely stops. It moves almost 1/4"! Rand |
