Hey Garemie are you interested in a homemade FL250 head I am currently working on ??
If so let me know --- FREE --- as long as you pay shipping.
It will be a few days because it's new years and machine shop closed. I need stuff for this project.

Also working on a homemade chassis dyno for my oddys. Waiting on parts from the wrecking yard I need for it but my buddy hasn't got around to getting my parts.
Nobody got dyno sheets for oddys so I will make my own.

Hey Garemie I need some info from you.
Honda does not tell me the size of the nut on the head studs.
All it says is: "Nut,special,8mm"
The holes in the head are HUGE (13mm). Way more than that 8mm they post.
I need to know this so that I weld on a large enough tube to get a socket in it.
I am just guessing, but are you using a 14mm socket ??

What I am looking for is what size is the socket you are using on these nuts ??

Isn't the 8mm referring to the 8mm locator bolt?

I'll find out the stud/nut size tomorrow. They are internal on the Rands water cooled heads so I may have to search for a nut I have lying around. I know I have some extras somewhere.

Don't knock yourself out taking anything apart if you can't find the correct bolt and nut laying around.
I will just take a guess at it.
It just seems a bit weird that it has such a large hole for such a small stud. I know there are dowels for this head that locate it.
At worst you would have to grind a socket to fit down the tube.

Each tube has to be pressure tested for leaks. I use about 20 psi.
Yup it's involved :-) .

I failed to find any bolts by the way.

Also -- if its easier, you can delete one or the other spark plug holes.

Yes sir that will be done because it is just to difficult anyway.
The top plug will be used.

Yup the dyno is on my next to do list after this head. I am still waiting for my buddy to bring wrecking yard parts I need. All other projects put on hold until this is dyno thing is done.
Edit: There is a dyno for race cars about an hour from my place. I thought about taking all three oddys there. Then I gave up on the idea because I doubt the guys just want to do one pull on three machines and they would probably want more money than it would cost to build my set up. I would rather learn to do it myself. With a dyno shop that close to you I can't believe you didn't drag it there already.

All tubes have now passed the pressure test (20 psi ).
Next item will be plugging that second sparkplug hole. I will use an old sparkplug and remove the ceramic core. Then turn new guts for the plug and weld into sparkplug. Install. You can see that old plug with the guts removed laying on the table.

I remember that it's the air cooled head I sent you. I can't remember if I also sent you a 350 head?

YES SIR THAT'S RIGHT.
That's the head you were going to throw into the local land fill if nobody took the parts off your hands.
You were in the process of moving and were gona throw the stuff in the dump.
This is why we NEVER throw anything in the garbage unless it is total junk.
I can assure you that anything in my garbage can is unrepairable.

I may have prematurely offered this head. OH GOD IT'S BAD. Leaks everywhere. Honda used some kind of pig iron aluminum and it is real tough for me not to get any leaks. I have tried two different kinds of aluminum wire. All I have is a spool gun. I need a tig welder REAL bad but can't justify the cost. I don't know what I am going to do right now. Have fooled around for 4 hrs trying to seal leaks tonight. Then another one pops up. This is also the reason when you asked me to do a cylinder I was some what reluctant and told you to be prepared to lose a cylinder. Am still plugging away at it but it looks bad.

Well it's 1 am in the morning right now and the more I look at this head the more I think I will have to cut it apart tomorrow and start over. Will have to sleep on it.
None of the welds on the new aluminum leak but any weld on the original head leaks -- DAMN Honda and their pig iron aluminum.

Fascinating. Is that due to contamination or cheap metal?

I don't know.
All I know is the new aluminum that I bought for this project welds perfectly.
But anything attached to the head is a nightmare to weld. It's worse than those FL350 heads I did, and I had a lot of trouble with those to.
This ain't over. I plan on cutting it apart today. Stay tuned.
I thought I could ship it this week but that ain't gona happen.

If you look close at those pics you will see that I ground down the Honda head to clean metal.
I did not use a grinding disk. I used a flapper wheel.
So it's clean metal and I suspect it's the type off aluminum Honda used. Those heads are cast, so no telling what kind of mess it is made of -- beer cans, tin foil, cups who knows.
I'm running 100% Argon and tried two kinds of wire.

Sure looks good in the pictures. Sorry it is such a fight.

My only other thought would be to try preheating the head. Just a thought. If its crap material, not much you can do about that.

Like always CO I give you a A+, awesome work sir.

Edit - I wonder if some sort of Flux would help. Wish I knew more.

Very cool project! Best of luck with it.

I wonder if your having trouble with the cast aluminum due to what's covered in this video.

Just a guess though, ToT recently posted this video and it came to mind when you mentioned your troubles.

That's one of my favourite channels on youboob.
He's creative and a very good machinist.
Yes I did view the whole video. I know what his vids are like as I have seen many before.
I do have a welding ticket but I don't consider myself very good a metallurgy. I can tig weld but don't have a tig welder. Which is what I really need for stuff like this. So I make do with the machines I have.
That's the real issue here.
