My dad was in the Hitler youth when he was a kid.
He was in eastern part of Germany so consequently that was the Russian front.
He was assigned to a half track that had the 4 barrel anti aircraft piece on it.
While they were out hunting pigs for food they got hit by a tank round. It was a mobility kill because the round went low and knocked off the track. The regular soldier threw my dad over the top and told him to run from shell hole to shell hole. They all got away.
My dad and his Hitler youth buddy went to a local farmer to ask for food and the goof asked them what they had to trade. Obviously they had nothing. The farmer said all he needs are house shoes for his pet canary. The two boys were armed, hungry and mad (Not good). They hatched a plan to go into the field at night and grab stuff. He said they agreed to kill the farmer if he came out and tried to stop them. Fortunately (for the farmer) he didn't see or hear them.
When the Russians over ran his town they tried to rape my grandma. Dad was hiding in the attic and shot two of them with his pistol. The third guy got away he said.
He said Hitler youth were given a pistol, a knife and a few grenades. Dad said he used to role the grenades in the house and his mom would yell at him.
When the war ended he worked for the Russians making field radios. My dad knew how to make frequency filters because he was trained in electrical by a former u-boat guy. Dad said that guy was the biggest thief he ever knew. They would make radios and sell them after the war. That's how he knew how to make frequency filters and radios.
Since my dad was very young the Russians trusted him. He had a special badge that let him go anywhere in the military complex (the dummies). My dad was in touch with the under ground because he wanted to escape east Germany. They watched the border and when the jeeps were at the farthest point they told him to run. They told him to drop when he heard a shot and then jump up and run again. This was because the guards would lower their rifles after firing because they would believe they hit the runner.
On the other side he was captured by the British. They de-briefed him. My dad gave all the radio frequencies and other info to the British. They put him on a train and told him NOT to get off until the end of the line. There would be two officers that would take him to Krupp.
He worked there for a while. Eventually he met my mom and in 1961 came to Canada. My dad was not even allowed to get on the boat until HE could prove that he had:
1) a trade Canada needed - he was an electro mechanic (a German trade)
2) a job to go to - the mine in Lynn Lake Manitoba provided a job letter
3) a sponsor - my uncle was already here and sponsored
This is one of the reasons why I am so ANTI border jumper immigrant. The current gov't of Canada is spitting in the face of people like my dad and others who came here the honest way. What does it say about an immigrant when the first thing they do is break the law by illegally entering Canada ??
After my dad was here awhile my mom and I came over. I was a year old.

My dad did NOT have the ability to teach.
He would yell and scream like a Nazi drill sergeant.
He had no patients.
Therefore I did not learn any electrical.
That may have been some of his up bringing. When he worked for the Russians/East Germans he said they were rough. You did as you were told and everything was done the hard way. He said he spent weeks filing metal pieces by hand. It was part of the apprenticeship. When the instructor checked his work, imperfect pieces were rejected and the yelling began. My dad said show me your pieces. So the guy did. My dad grabbed a square and tried to check the instructors piece. He was promptly smacked in the head. The guy said you don't check my stuff, I check yours. He said that during Christmas the Russian officer would come around with a bottle of vodka and bread. You had to take a bite of bread and a swig if vodka. My dad refused and was promptly hit to the ground. Apparently it's a major insult not to drink and take bread with the Russians at Christmas.
