Found an article in an old Jan 1984 dirt wheels magazine about a company called Pro ATV in California that made Phantom 3's based on an Odyssey. The one in the article is blue and white, with a wing on the back, and was built for racing the baja 1000. Does anybody still have one, or any info or pics available ? ...a member named Tripp had one and sold it to Hauss, from what i've found out on the internet ?!

I owned 1 10 years ago. The car is small its a tight fit for anyone over 6 feet. It was powered by a watercooled hybrid fl250 fl350 Engine. it had the cases of a fl250 with the crank and rod of a fl350 with a water cooled cylinder and head of a fl350. The frame was all cromolly and the shocks were pregressive suspension. the fron was 10 inches of travel with dual j-arms like fl350. The tranny was a center mounted fl250 with a swing axle design rear suspension with 8 inches of travel. I put a 440 cyuna ultralite Engine in it then sold it. VERY VERY STUPID ON MY PART. But hey when your 19 and you don't know what u have that stuff happends. The moddified fl350 fl350 Engine went into a challenger car and was sold as well. I know i know don't remind me

...all these articles are from the january 1984 Dirt Wheels Magazine, so i'm guessing there were upgrades to suspension, etc, in later yr's. I've always wanted a honda pilot, but could never find one in canada in decent shape, or for a reasonable price. When i saw the Phantom in this 1984 mag i found, i've wanted to build something similar ever since, with a newer Engine, and probably some suspension upgrades...anybody know where a decent odyssey/pilot frame, or a cheap/needs work odyssey/pilot might be for sale ?

What type of Engine would be best for a homebuilt project ? A 600cc streetbike Engine would be nice, but not sure about wanting a 6 speed gearbox. A Doner sled might be a god option - Engine, transfer case etc... Any other idea's ??

Found an old frame / project
dirt cheap, ...now to transform
it into something trick !
Lots of different designs and
engines to put in.

Has anybody run an 83/84
ATC 250R aircooled setup
in one ?

Skip the transfer case, and
just run the chain drive to
some modded CV's / independant
suspension

...have one that was free,
and can easily port, mod it,
and build a better pipe.

I have seen the FL250 crank cases welded up, modified to accept and run the 81-84 ATC250R top ends I have never personally seen one run but after owning both FL250's and a 1983 ATC250R since new I bet it is a huge improvement over the FL250 top end, its the same bore and stroke its just getting it bolted up and sealed up is the trick, a friend of mine seen this setup run before and says it kicked ass back in the early racing days.

You might find some more Pro Atv pics searching my site take a look.

I would assume that was a Suzuki top end that was bolted to the super case bottom end.

This buggy has some cool rear
suspension designs.
The steering is underneath though,
limiting ground clearance.

Have a VW steering box, but
thinking a rack and pinion
might be better ?

What's the best steering setup ?

I like the steering found on the stock Pilots and Odysseys myself, light weight, simple, strong, reliable, inexpensive.

Having your steering hang out where it can get ripped off or damaged does not make much sense for a off road machine, my guess is these were raced on groomed tracks where you didnt have to worry about a large rock damaging them.

I asked Renni Awana when he was racing the SODA series in WI if they ever raced the stadium lites in desert races his reply was NO I asked why he said "they are too fragile of a car"

You have any better scans of them pics, what year and magazine they come from?
