Well its official here is the real reason why we sent more troops to Afghanistan

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/world ... erals.html

Just search your favorite trusted news for mineral deposits in afghanistan

Quote:
Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

The vast scale of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth was discovered by a small team of Pentagon officials and American geologists.

"Pentagon" + "Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world" = were never leaving... cant take the chance of putting trillions of dollars in mineral deposits back into the Taliban's hands looks like were going to be their for a LONG time. :-)

Good for the Afghans. Take a look into the infrastructure of the country and you'll see there is a slim chance in hell that any of the minerals could be exported in bulk. No major highways, no water ports, no rail to speak of. They'd have to get in good w/ the Pakis, Iranians or Turkmenis to move any of it out. It would take untold billions to get their infrastructure up to par to move these minerals because of the topography.

Good article on the ring road, but consider the source as always: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125046546672735403.html

Quick look at the overall transport picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_in_Afghanistan

We did the same thing to the Native Americans... Except we called them Savages, now the word of fear is terrorist...
I know as long as this region has oil and now minerals we will never get out of there...
