Hey guys! I just completed a rebuild of the Engine and put a new clutch and belt on at the same time.

It starts great but I cannot get it to shift into gear without major grinding or just slamming it in (in others words I can't get it in gear).

You guys are the Gods so please tell me what I am missing.

Holy smokes 2008 and only 2 posts
Anyways welcome back.
I am assuming you have the FL350 ?? Stock clutch ??
This is common for this machine. Even at idle it turns the driven pulley on the transmission and it will grind. Your idle must be as low as possible without stalling. You must be running a snug belt. My brother and I run a longer belt but I do get flak for it. But I works well for us as the Engine is spun up a bit more before clutch comes on. We run the HP3004 and it is 3/4" longer. It may not work for you. We run a 94c and a 102c comet clutch. Not sure what others run. The longer belt don't spin the driven at idle and then it goes into gear without grinding.
Note: DO NOT rev the Engine at idle all day long in your driveway. The transmission is a splash lube so it needs to be turning to lube all the bearings inside. You will blow your AB gear. We put two quarts of oil in the transmission. This over fill works well for us and have not blown a tranny. No parts for these around either so keep that in mind.

Another solution is what Randman and others do, and that is they jumper out the change switch at the back of the transmission. That way you can put it in gear before you start it.
Like Randman says: CAUTION
Because you could run over yourself if you blip the throttle while you are standing next to it. Big dangers there if you forget about it.
But you will be able to run the snug belt.

At the end of the day you better stop grinding it or you will destroy the engagement dogs.

Thanks (sorry for the post in the wrong place),

Yeah I've been here for a while but bought a business then blew up the Engine, you get the picture. Back in the seat now (sold the business, rebuilt the Engine. LOL).

I do have a 94C clutch and the belt does seem tight. I will adjust the idle low, low, low. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

As you say, can't get anymore of these so I want to not grind anymore than possible (not the best design in my humble opinion).

Thanks again for finding this lost poster.

Adjust the idle just short of stalling or as low as you can get it. This will help a lot.

Make sure the Ody is up to full operating temp when you make the idle adjustment.
