I should have paid more attention to the first part of your post regarding the jetting. Shoubadaba nailed it when he mentioned running a 460 main jet which is where you want to be for your elevation. A 330 is way too lean. At 4750 feet in elevation, I run a 420 main in my 38mm Mikuni. This is on a bone stock Engine with a DG pipe and air box modifications.

The porting you have is just about what Ridindirty has on the water jacketed cylinder that we are working with. He will be running my old 38mm Minuki and we are starting of with a main jet of 460 due to the porting, exhaust and intake modifications and we will work our way down if need be.

Again as I Shoubadaba and I mentioned, don't rely on an EGT to do your jetting. Once jetted properly, the EGT will give you a base line of what temperatures your Engine will run at. Once you have established that, then you will know when she is starting to run hot by a rise in temperatures from your base line numbers.

You can run a thicker Cometic base gasket which is .020" and the thicker and the full three piece which is around .030". If memory server me right, the Cometic head gasket is around .035" which looks like what you are currently running.

Thanks for all the great info. It is appreciated. I learned a lot off this post.
I asked questions on other posts from other people but never got the good info I needed like this.
Thanks.

I looked for a pic of your pipe as it exits the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) to see if your EGT probe was placed properly. The best placement for the EGT prope will be 5 to 6 inches from the piston.

The manual describes the bolt which holds the counter balancer gear on is a "special bolt".
Is it a left hand thread or right hand?

Are you taking the lowerend apart as well? Usually doesnt need to be torn apart for a topend poof kaboom. Clean it out with carb cleaner and air really good. Add some oil to the bearings and see how free it turns.

Ya I am gona strip it. There was just shrapnel everywhere. Even down the oil gallery holes. Everything turns free but I have a nice warm shop and lots of time. I think the bearings are ok but I am sure these are open bearings (no seals) so I will just strip it.

My notes show 2-1/2" from the end of the pipe so it looks like your dead on.

I am reposting these notes from Randy at Odyssey Salvage, I wanted to give credit to the person that Im quoting....... "When installing the sensor itself first drill the 3/16" hole in the top of your pipe down 2 1/2" from the end of the exhaust pipe, that will end up just in the V of where the 2 springs hook up on the stock pipe. Mount the tip end of the sensor 1/8th of a inch short of dead center of the pipe. The more you are off that mark the more the egt reading will be wrong."......

I have always had relatively accurate readings with his guidelines.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I was getting real upset there for a while. Engines wouldn't run for more than three miles before BOOOM. This is the third time for this motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )). I just didn't realize what I bought. Some were my mistakes others were the previous owners. I will be useing the suggestions provided. I'm in the process of tearing it down now and just waiting for parts which takes a long time here in Canada sometimes. Hope I can get a complete gasket set or I will be making them by hand.

Did you ever heat cycle this Engine?

Post subject:  Re: another Engine kabooom

I just got the oddy back together. I followed the recommendations in this post.
I am running a 440 main now. However when we started it today we had to run the idle screw all the way in to get it to idle. Does anyone know why?? I am sure it is still a jetting issue. Also I managed to get the compression down to 148lbs by running two cylinder base gaskets for a total of .060 spacing.

Post subject:  Re: another Engine kabooom

When you are referring to the idle screw, are you talking about the idle adjustment screw or are you talking about the air fuel mixture screw?

If it isn't the air fuel mixture screw. how many turns out is it? It should be anywhere from 1 to 2.5 turns out.

Which clip is the needle in?
