Guys,

I recently acquired a FL350R and am desperatly trying to get her to run properly.
She had a bashed front end and no brakes, but the Engine was running (seemingly well) with a bungeed dirt bike gas tank on the roof.
Spent a bit of time and a LOT of money fixing the front end and going through all the brakes, but she ran AWESOME!
Unfortunately around turns the roof "mounted" gas tank would fly off.
So I orded a spun aluminum gas tank to replace the other one.
While I was waiting to get the new gas tank, I decided to pull the carb to clean it out and hopefully fix a small fuel leak, which I thought was a stuck float.
So put her all back together, and she ran awesome!
Then I added more gas, and she barely ran.
Pulled the carb, cleaned it out, then she ran awesome again.
Until I added gas again.
Now I cant get her to start.
Getting spark, plug is clean, compression at ~120.

So, what now?
I would like to verify the fuel system is correct.
I have read many posts saying gravity feed does not work.
I have also read it can work if you change out the floats.
-Where to source the new floats and which ones?
-If I should add a pump, which one would be best?
-Any fuel line routing schematic available?
-Can I just replace the carb with one capable of gravity feed?
-If so, which one and where to get?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions!
Really want to get this thing running well and throw up some dirt!!

well your compression is a little low it should be around 150 psi

what size are the jets in your carb?

post a photo of the carb

you need a fuel pump to run it properly they can be bought new for around $20

In my opinion I would
1) Do a pressure and vacuum test on that Engine first.
You say it ran "awesome" well they usually do when running real lean - then boooom.
The give away here is when you said it ran like crap when you added fuel. That tells me when you added fuel you got more head pressure to supply the carb with fuel and it may have starved a bit when tank was low.
2) Buy a fuel pump. I use a polaris pump #3085275. You can gravity feed it if you want but the
carb should be pump feed.
3) Do a flow test on your new pump. You should get about 4oz in ten seconds.
4) Strip the carb and make sure it is clean and all ports pass air.
5) Do #1 above before you even start it again.

Side note: my Engine has 125psi compression and it runs like a raped ape.

Thanks guys. I will source a fuel pump, plumb it in, clean the carb, and then try again!

For reference - The FL350 manual shows 138.6 psi

Not sure if that is post or pre recall

When it comes to compression I think some of my lower compression is due to the fact the Wiseco has a large ring end gap. You are suppose to have .004 per inch of bore so that's .012 for the fl350.
(Give or take a bit) But everytime I do a rebuild on mine I see .020 ring end gap right out of the box.
Since Wiseco is all we can get now we are screwed.Maybe Honda had it a lot tighter then I am getting.
Feel free to shoot at me on this as it is just an opinion and I can't back it up with facts, it's just what I am seeing here on my machines. At the end of the day it runs like a raped ape so that's good enough.

Your right on...I've posted before about Wiseco rings not gapping correctly at all

I honestly thought about trying rings from the next bore up and seeing if they can fit down, but I'm sure that would be a big mistake

My FL350 rebuild is a single layer head gasket, speed chaser base gasket with copper spray ... and I'm at about 130~135 WITHOUT carb or exhaust...I was expecting 145-150

I did ask for a .005 clearance though, based on all the discussions about the air cooled and Wiseco

BK911 I have been running a gravity feed tank for a couple of years and have not had any problems with it. I did go to a larger carb. due to the bore size (80mm), but never had any problems. I read where you cleaned the carb. and it ran good. What size fuel line are you using and are you using a inline filter? When you cleaned the carb again, was it dirty inside? Also are you using the old fuel lines or new ones? I just went thru a problem similar but my problem was the pump that I was getting my gas from had started coming loose from the inside. (ethanol I think) is what caused that. I don't run my line straight down from the tank to the carb. I have enough line to run to the side of the frame with the shut off valve there, this helps with head pressure and puts the valve easy to reach. Another thing is I tried running a larger hose and that made so much head pressure that the floats couldn't hold the needle shut. I am back to a 1/4" hose but I did go to a 3/8" cutoff and filter due to better flow than with the 1/4". Hope this helps Thanks Billy

Billy,

What carb did you go with and where did you get it?

Thanks,
BK
