Question.
Do you press the cranks seals in until they hit the bottom?

When ever you put seals in something, you usually make the face of the seal flush on the side you are putting it in. Hope this helps.
Many times there is no back stop for the seal to bump up against, so you just make it flush.
Which seal are you replacing ??

I replaced the crank seal on the stator side. I pressed it in until it hit the stop. Now I'm worried I should have pressed it only until flush. Should I replace the seal now?

No your good to go.
If there is a lip for a seal to butt up against then it was designed that way. Sometimes there is no back stop.

A good example of what I was talking about is if you replace the double lip crank seal in the counter balancer area. This seal has no back stop and you can drive it right into the crank bearing. You install this one flush. Pics below.

Since you are replacing a seal I am assuming you had an issue. If that is the case, then did you pressure/vacuum test the Engine yet ?? Don't even start it until it passes the tests or your just wasting your time. You need to find out if the double lip seal on the other side of the crank is still good.
One good way to do a quick check is to see if your counter balancer oil is black. If it is then it has been contaminated with the oil/fuel mix. It must be clean looking oil. The sure way to know is to do the pressure/vacuum test. Always do this test with the intake manifold on. You need to check that unit as well for leaks. You can do it all in one go.
Also you NEVER RIP AN Engine APART WITHOUT DOING A PRESSURE TEST. This is an invaluable tool to let you know that your seals are still good. No sense ripping it apart and then finding out a seal is shot.
