Recently picked up a new fl350 it started and ran fine but the owner mentioned the ignition could be a little tricky. I took it around the block with no problems and took it up to the trails that weekend. The trails were pretty rough and seemed like every 5 minutes it would cut out almost like it was getting enough fuel, and wouldn’t respond to more throttle. I assumed it was the ignition switching off. I would give it a few minutes and then it would start again. Replaced ignition, plug wire and plug, starter solenoid, cleaned the carb, replaced fuel filter and still no help. This fl350 was severely neglected and needed the attention anyway but still want to fix the issue. Any help that could help me narrow down what is happening would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking fuel pump next but not sure if that would fix it. It will start to sputter then die, also this fl will not start without taking off air filter and spraying starter fluid if that gives any clues.

Thanks in advance for any tips

I would never recommend starting fluid on a 2 cycle. I would be concerned it would create a lean condition - not enough lubricant to the Engine. if you need to prime it use 2 cycle mix.

I wonder if the pickup tubes in the tank could be plugged with rust or other crap.

IMO you need to do a flow test on the fuel pump per the manual.

Be careful - guys have blown up engines not knowing it was not getting proper fuel flow. Engine rebuild is expensive.

Take your time and you will figure it out. Post a picture or two please.

Remember you are dealing with a 35 year old machine.

I'm waiting for CO to Chime in. He is the fl350 pro.

a lot of info here - please read up and get a manual.

The only mechanical fuel pumps I would ever suggest for FL would be the following Polaris pump:

https://www.partzilla.com/product/polaris/2520227

Or the following Mikuni pump:

https://www.amazon.com/Mikuni-002-227-D ... B00C178M5K

No others have been found to be acceptable in FL application.

Next, fuel filter.

I found a very high-flow and suitable replacement available locally at Automotive shops.

The item/filter is a FRAM 33293, which may also be a Micro Guard or WIX filter (FRAM G7092 or PTC PG7092 also on the box). This is a FUEL INJECTION filter for a small car, but the in-store blow-through test yields a very surprisingly non-restrictive fuel filter. AND it has 5/16" mail ends which easily connect to fuel lines; AND it fits the factory rubber holder.
