Nelly dropped off his FL350 Engine for a CSI claiming it only had 130 psi ?

He has a few projects going here on the site
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9670" ."..

A hood viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9797" ."..

4 pristine tires and rims for sale viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9871" ."..

Anyways first thing needs done before taking this Engine apart is it needs pressure tested, the clutch needs removed so I can tighten the clamp for the hose for my tester, then the intake and exhaust plugged up.

The Engine held 10 psi for 10 minutes no leaks to worry about so time to pull the top end for inspection.

Head pulled

Cylinder off you can see they never drilled the lube holes in the piston so much FOR READING THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH THE PISTON

It was run a while with the low compression see the brown stain on the cylinder wall that is blow by, the Engine suffered a mini seizure that looks like it started at the exhaust bridge had they drilled the lube holes per the installation instructions I doubt we would be looking at the inside of this Engine.

This Engine has a after market exhaust manifold I assume its for a DG pipe see how it does not match.

If this pipe was going to be run with this Engine for the life I would modify the exhaust port tunnel to match the pipe to improve reverse flow and performance, if you ever went back to the stock manifold it would not match because its smaller.

The RED arrows are pointing to the opening in the exhaust port tunnel on the cylinder the GREEN arrows are pointing to where it needs ground out to match the manifold.

A lite hone of the cylinder with the Sunnen AN-112 ridged stone hone shows slight scuffing to match the scuffing on the piston, the bore is amazingly straight.

After a little more hone the cylinder cleaned right up except for a little scuffing to the side of the exhaust port and on the exhaust bridge itself, if this was my cylinder I would install another piston kit and run it, your only real concern for ring seal is above the exhaust port where the cylinder is under pressure soon as the piston starts to uncover the exhaust port the cylinder pressure starts to rapidly drop off when you lose gas pressure you also lose ring seal anyways, see this Ring seal and heat transfer for more info viewtopic.php?t=1269

Bottom end has plenty of oil nothing really abnormal found other than oil is still migrating to the starter side of the Engine through the vent system please read this service bulletin Honda released years ago. http://pilotodyssey.com/350sb.htm Starter info viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5939

Red arrows pointing to the oil that flows to the mag side of the Engine.

I had a hell of a time removing the piston, who ever installed the piston installed the circlips with NO ENDS lining up with the CIRCLIP EXTRACTOR SLOT I have never seen this before both ends was the same way, this piston was a low hour piston that could have been slightly sanded and a new set of rings installed and reused I would have kept it for a spare but since they installed the gaps of the circlips over the EXTRACTOR SLOT I had to damage the piston to remove the clips turning a piston that was worth 100.00 into a paper weight worth about .25 in scrap aluminum.

I also want to point out that you install the GAP in the cir clips either at the TOP or BOTTOM of the piston so inertia from the piston going up and down changing directions thousands of times a minute cant bounce or collapse the cir clip out of the groove .

The red arrow is the extractor slot
The green arrows is the ends of the cir clip
The blue arrows are where the gap between the green arrows should have been.

The piston kit Nelly needs to order is a 533P4 that is the numbers on top of the current piston

You also need to order a new wrist pin bearing that does not come with the kit and a top end gasket set.

You will want to shop around for a piston kit the prices vary quite a bit from place to place.

this is a blowout price http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wiseco-Piston-K ... 978wt_1037
81mm piston correct? They don't have that matching model number in the auction.

Needle/wristpin bearing, i did not compare prices,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wiseco-Top-End- ... 4cf00096a8
another, cheaper
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-FL-350-Od ... a9&vxp=mtr

i have the head and base(oem single layer head at 7thou, and 24thou vesra base).. here are the other gaskets
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-HONDA-GASKE ... c8&vxp=mtr

balancer gasket if you have hoser do the mod
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-FL350-ODY ... 0b&vxp=mtr

intake/reed
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-FL350-ODY ... 43&vxp=mtr

You can buy a whole top end kit (vesra, not athena or cometic, i have heard vesra is better) but the head gasket is quite thick.. thinner single layer OEM aluminum gasket is best from what i understand. right?

Hoser! You're the man!! Thanks for looking into this for me. I am going to want you to do everything you think I should to to get the most reliable power out of this Engine. hoserize it!! :-)

Do you think I should bore and go up a size in piston? Seeing as I am having to buy one anyways and you're already into it. Would I benefit from this?

The exhaust manifold is from a DG exhaust and this exhaust will be staying on there, so if you can improve the flow, please do so!

If at all possible, I'd like you to do the starter mod for me and install the vent too.

I can't believe whoever installed the piston didnt drill it!! You have saved me from certian death my friend!

Dang Tim, you waste no time! :-) Thanks for all the links! I will look into ordering this stuff ASAP!

Yes, he sent them for me. I have the remaining gaskets here with me (they came in the mail today) and I am hoping the piston kit and wrist pin bearing show up tomorrow. If they do I may swing by with this stuff on Sunday and take my Jeep to the cliffs for the day. :-)

All parts here, after cleaning all the gasket surfaces off I honed the cylinder to the proper cllearance, beveled the ports, relieved the exhaust bridge, matched the exhaust manifold to the cylinder for proper flow, drilled the holes in the piston to provide more lubrication for the exhaust bridge, hoserized the piston for better lube all around http://www.pilotodyssey.com/pistonprep1.htm
and
Image

Assembled the top end, I didnt install the reed cage since I don't have the bolts or the manifold the reed petals are in great shape.

I also cleaned up the clutch and lubed it with the comet clutch lube but did not reinstall the clutch since it blocks the area required to properly install the pulse tube for the fuel pump you need to make sure that tube is on 100% right and no leakage most them Honda clamps are hard to tighten when the hose gets as old as it is you might want to replace the Honda clamps with a regular hose clamp of the proper size for the line.
