Post subject:  81-82 ATC250R Engine CSI

Here is a Engine I picked up from a guy on the 3 wheeler board, I have another Engine but the rod is real loose I bought this one hoping the crank was good to use in the other one.

Here is what the owner had to say about it

Quote:
The Engine was rebuilt 5 years ago and has less than 2 hours on it. It still has 2 problems that weren't rectified during the rebuild. 1) The 3rd gear is bad, plenty of power to double shift 2nd to 4th. 2.) The Engine case half with the drain plug, the drain plug hole is slightly stripped so you can only hand tighten the bolt. It's never leaked, but it's still a minor problem. Otherwise, the head was bought new from Honda which I had pulled off as I was readying to list it on ebay so you probably want a new head gasket for it, the jug was bored and honed which was the first one on the jug, the crank was split and balanced with a new rod put on it, and the clutch components were new.

Below are pics he sent with it ..

Got the Engine today so did a quick CSI just to see if the crank was any good.

I removed the top end and notice the crank was hard to turn when trying to turn the Engine over using the kick starter so I removed the flywheel cover so I could turn it over by hand on the flywheel and discovered the lighting coil bracket broke and the coil was bouncing around under the flywheel.

Bottom end well oiled up dirty but not rusty, not a big deal as I will be splitting the cases and removing the crankshaft most likely new bearings and seals will be used.

The bottom end cleaned up really good then I oiled it again with clean fresh oil the Engine will be stored until I get time to split both bottom ends, go through all the parts, pick out all the best then combine to make one good Engine, this is a just in case spare Engine so no hurry getting to it, by the way my current Engine is running I will probably never need this one (knock on wood lmao)

Yup two of them are 81-81 and the 3rd (your old one) is a 83 form what I understand the only major difference between the 81-82 and the 83-84 is the shifter shaft length when I build up the combined parts of the two red engines I will probably install a later 83-84 shifter shaft so it will drop right into my 83R if I should ever need it, I will also paint it all black to match.

Your old Engine will also get a complete CSI and built up as a running Engine (spare #2) the rod on the one I got today is much tighter than yours it looks as described by the owner and only has a few hours on the new rod since it was rebuilt.

My current Engine (original ) rod is the looses out of all the engines I have, once I get all other projects caught up I will do these engines then swap one into my ATC whilst its still running then it will get torn down and the crank rebuilt and what ever else it needs and shelved and kept as original, some day it will be reinstalled maybe on its 40th birthday lol.

All that's left to do on my ATC to get it back to a daily driver is get the seat recovered, change the chain (links getting stiff, I think kid hit it with pressure washer) and install that rear axle from you then it will be GO TIME!
