Was assembling an 06-09 TRX 450R Engine and found this cam to be just a bit out of spec lol. Knew something was wrong almost immediately...the lobes def caught my eye as being in the wrong place @ TDC (Top Dead Center) on the gear. Fortunately had the same cam to compare and replace with but really blew my mind.

File comment: No heat signatures or gauling...just one good twist I guess.

Yes its a press fit for sure...Hotcams stage 2 MX "drop in" camshaft for TRX 450R. Got a spat number from Hotcams so they can look at why this happened. Im gonna ship it to them this week. That cam came out of an Engine that was worn bad and had broken the timing chain. When I looked into it a chip from the main bearing retainer looked as though it had made its way to the chain and broke it. Found a few more pieces of the chain around in the Engine. There was no valve collision at all in this Engine even after the chain broke. Shocked me that it had done this without any evidence of heat or stress visually to the gear flange or camshaft. Hotcams says that the stamped number is identical on all these cams for ALL R and ER applications from 04-09 and nothing is different about them at all. So my conclusion is that this thing twisted during the event that broke the chain and stopped this Engine from running...but it is one that is really worth sending to the manufacturer for some answers. Perhaps the cam caused the failure in the chain...but would have expected evidence of a valve collision if that were the case...even just a low rpm kiss. But nothing...WIERD STUFF.

Hoser...misread the question lol. Actually the gear bolts to the flange that is SUPPOSED TO BE fixed to the cam permenantly...set by the factory...never to be moved. The gear has the marks and is non adjustable from these two bolt holes in a drop in application.

My guess is its pressed on the cam and maybe they use a loctite or something to help retain it, the sudden release of energy when the chain broke over came the strength of the retainer and it rotated.

How many hours on the chain? At how many hours are you suppose to change it?

There was no hourmeter on it...so time is truly an unknown. The Engine(best said) had gobs of time on it and almost all at an MX track being abused and redlined lol. The service limits I will have to check into for an answer on chain wear...I have religiously replaced a chain every season due to the fact that we race...and rev...and just push them silly. One of my fellow powersports techs says he has seen a Web-Cam do this once too. Its a first for me that I wanted to share tho.

This would be a good time to see what other Engine builders are doing, welding, drill and pin?

Loctite makes a retainer you use on assembled parts or assembled fasteners you could add to the new cam cant see where it would hurt anything, you just apply and it will wick into the joint no matter how tight the tolerance. http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-3316- ... 37423.aspx

OR call locktite see what they recommend for your application.
