Hey guys. I took the FL to Pismo this past weekend. She was running great until the screws in the carb slide came loose and the throttle cable came out. That was an easy fix. Then the bolts holding the pull start came out and now they are stripped.

Once I got a half ass fix on the pull start my buddy took it for a spin. When he came back the FL would not shut down. The switch did not kill it. So I pulled the spark plug wire and that did not work. Finally I hanked the fuel line and she died!

WTF! The only thing I could think was the Engine was so hot that the fuel was combusting with out needing a spark.

What do the experts think?

once had a working dog like that, was teaching him to work without being fed, he just about got it right... and then the b@#$%^d died :-)

dunno mate i'm no expert, was it a hot day? how high is your compression?

Night riding and no idea on compression. Yesterday before we left I fired it up to get it on the trailer and it ran fine!

No idea on compression.

if it does it again try stopping it by pulling the choke out, this is better than starving it of fuel (i reckon)

have you got the right piston and con-rod and crank for the cr cylinder?

Was the Engine just at idle and wouldn't die? or was it revving and wouldn't die. You said you had an issue with your throttle cable, is it possible that it was holding the slide open a little bit from being assembled wrong or somthing?

My FL570 did that once when the throttle cable was frayed. I had it in neutral and pressed the throttle and it got stuck halfway open. tried to kill it with the killswitch, nothing. I ended up pulling the fuel line to kill it as well.

1)Yes it was the first big run on the new Engine. I rode it around a little and was gentle. A friends wife rode it for 20 minutes and it happened after a buddy took it out. We all know he put it through its paces!

2)I like and will try the choke it out method next time! ( I was just flipping out cause it wouldn't turn off panic set in and fuel was my first thought)

3)All internals were purchased by Hoser when he redid my cylinder. I sure they are correct.

4) I think it was running a little faster than idle and that's what put me in panic mode. I will try and find a replacement screw for the slide maybe that was part of the issue.

5) Hoser would know if there was porting I cant recall.

My first 350 Ody did that to me once or twice. I would hit the kill switch and the Engine would continue to just scream. It turned out to be a blown gasket at the base of the cylinder. I would strongly suggest doing a leak test on it.

Will do. Still unpacking everthing from this weekends Pismo trip. Once I get her off the trailer and into the garage I will do a leak down and compression test on her.

With a 2 stroke Engine, if it is running fast enough with no load it can keep itself running. Im sure with my ody when the throttle was open from the frayed cable if it would have been in gear it would have not stayed running.

IT was running like a diesel Engine something in the combustion chamber was hot enough to continue to ignite the air/fuel being delivered to the combustion chamber.

i am only guessing but it sounds a bit like pre-ignition in a four stroke Engine. all it had was fuel, timing, and compression. do you know what octane fuel you were using? i'm with rarerat on the leak down test as this would alter the mix wouldn't it?

So I want to work on the FL this weekend.

1) Compression Test
2) Leakdown Test
3) Check Timing
4) Repair Pullstart Housing

I'm totally spacing on the leak down test???
I know the compression; choke on and full trottle 3 or 4 pulls should give a reading.
This will be my first "timing" adjustment ever! (fingers are crossed)

I did a search on how to's but couldn't find any!

OK did the compression test. Not sure if I did it right but I got a reading of 120.

My tester does not have a fitting as long as the spark plug like everyone recommends but I was told it would work.

I had the choke on and 3 4 pulls I got 120. For some reason I thought you needed to do it with the throttle open that one I got 90.

Time to pull the Engine so I can do the timing and hopefully a leak down test.

OH I did it on a cold Engine too. I am concerned with running it after it didn't turn off last time.

Hold the throttle wide open for the compression test

Pressure test is easy see if this helps viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9826

What is the history on this Engine ever been rebuilt?

List your mods.

I sent you a PM Hoser. My Engine is completely apart.

Hoping the damage is not beyond repair.

I didn't want to post these. I'm embarrassed and pissed at myself.

Saw this first and knew it was bad:

Oh shit, I would imagine the rod is not any better and needs rebuilt or replaced?

Actually I think the rod is fine the bearings are smooth.

I'm going to buy a parts washer today and clean everything.

I'll post more pics tonight once I get home.

Got a parts washer today. Washed all the sand out and everything is outside drying.

I will post pics in the morning. The bearings in the lower case are smooth and spin freely.

The bearings in the rod are good as well.

As for the piston and cylinder I'm not sure what is good or bad so I'll wait for opinions once I post the pictures.

My fingers are crossed!
