My fuel shutoff (petcock) is leaking. I can't seem to find the o-ring/gasket that goes between the shutoff and the tank. I'm thinking I can just make a gasket out of readily available rubber gasket material. Anyone have any better suggestions?

For the FL250, there isn't a gasket between the petcock and the tank, but there are two small o-rings on the petcock itself. Take it to a hardware store, and they can help you out. I found them at a local, not Home Depot or Lowes, hardware store.

I went to the local dirt bike shop today with no luck. Mine has something similar to a standard o-ring but thicker with squared off edges. I'll try the local hardware store.

well I don't see any o rings, here is a diagram. I'm not sure if all years are the same, you would think they are.
I would not use hardware store rubber as a temp fix. gas will break down that rubber and it will just leak again.

part#1 is still made by Honda http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/ATV/1979/FL250+A/FUEL+TANK+%2B+FUEL+VALVE/parts.html

e-bay people want 30$ for a used one, Honda is 27$ new.

Here's what they look like. I haven't been able to find a part number either. Maybe they come with the valve. If that's the case the $27 is worth the peace of mind.

well I did some research this is what I found.

This Honda 16950-371-015 PETCOCK ASSY. is used on these models and components:

1977 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1978 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1979 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1980 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1981 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1982 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1983 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1984 FL250 A FUEL TANK + FUEL VALVE
1976 GL1000 A FUEL TANK + SEAT
1976 GL1000LTD A FUEL TANK + SEAT
1977 GL1000 A FUEL TANK + SEAT
1978 GL1000 A FUEL TANK
1979 GL1000 A FUEL TANK

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
so then I found this. diagram with part#1 76 gl1000
Image
then cross referenced the part# since Honda no longer has it.
and this is the size you want 6.5mmX3mm so just find fuel rated ones and you're set.
good luck man.
no problem, it does not specify id or od, my guess its 6.5mm Inner diameter and 3mm cross section " thickness"
