Trying to get some info for this weird issue. I'm not new to engines, I have about a dozen Honda trikes that I've restored including 250r's and other 2 strokers. I picked up an '83 oddy a few years ago (wanted one FOREVER!!!) and finally got around to start working on it last week, might possibly due a full restore this winter, not sure yet... :) Anyways, when I bought it, it had a brand new Engine rebuilt on it and runs well, good compression, etc. I only gave it a quick spin when I bought it, seemed fine....

Now that I've used it more (couple of quick boots), I noticed that it idles fine when cold, starts easy too but when it's been driven a bit and the Engine gets warm, it idles slow for a few seconds and dies! Starts back up fine and runs great, but again dies when the throttle is let off. Noticed the idle speed screw is all the way in too, so the previous owner obviously had this issue... I took the carb apart and cleaned all the jets, no issues noted with any jets. Reset the air screw, etc. Checked for any Engine leaks, nothing, all seems good. Needle is on the center groove. Overall everything seems in really good shape.

The ONLY thing that is an issue, is that it's missing the air filter box! I just noticed that the other day! Good thing I haven't ridden it much yet. Don't know where the original owner did with it, he had the snorkel attached directly to the carb, up to the plastic intake at the top of the cage!!! I thought maybe he put a filter in the box... nope, just sucking raw air. I've ordered a new box and filter off flea-bay that should be here next week. Could the lack of an airbox be leaning it out so much when warm that it dies? Why would the idle screw be all the way in.. should be revving up when lean, not slowing down...?

Any insight would be great, thanks in advance!

Mark

Yup, I think I know about this issue.
Since you haven't done any real riding with it yet I bet money that when you have it sitting there idling and then blip the throttle hard it blubbers or stutters. The reason it runs ok when you first start it is because you probably have the choke on. Then when you take the choke off it dies.
So now we get to the issue. In my opinion it is the pilot circuit. Your pilot jet is to small. In my two machines which have aftermarket mikuni carbs. My brothers 38mm has a #30 pilot and my machine has a 34mm and a #25 pilot.
I will attach a good video of how to set this circuit later if I can find it on you tube.

This is actually a real good video on how to set the pilot circuit.
It starts out a bit slow but it is a good vid and it's how I set mine.

Just because you said it is fine until it heats up.....what's your pulse tube like?is it heating up and collapsing under the suction and stopping the pump?..
Just a shot in the dark

LOL
That's another real old post. Your not looking at the dates in the top right corner of the threads.
