What is the tightest I can run the cylinder head to piston clearance without it touching?

The above is a bad question to begin with....
The answer is just before it touches. i would recommend you speak to a knowledgeable Engine builder before going any further. An Engine can get very expensive to repair when all goes wrong.

You don't want a zero squish band. The general rule of thumb that I know if is .030" to .050". Anything tighter than .050" and you're going to need race gas. This of course will be dependent on your compression reading. The dome of the head has a lot to do with compression also.
