My FL250 was running all spiffy with a new motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )). Then it started to lose power and died. Now, it only backfires, mostly through the carb, but occasionally through the muffler. Arrggh. I removed the muffler to start diagnosing what might be wrong. If I spray started fluid into the carb intake boot flames will shoot from the exhaust port. Pretty cool looking I might add. I'm using Lucas oil at 32:1 ratio. I have spark and have tried a new spark plug. Same effect. Any suggestions? |

Sounds like the timing is off. Did you shear the key on the flywheel ?? Was the flywheel even tightened in the first place ?? |

Haven't touched flywheel since I bought it about 12 years ago. Probably a broken key. Is that visible or do I have to pull apart the driven pulley to check? |

Damn. Looks like I'll need a flywheel puller and a clutch outer holder. Anything else? |

I would not use starting fluid on a 2 cycle. Starting fluid will dissolve the oil and wash it off, not good for a premix 2 cycle Engine. If you need to use starting fluid you have problems that you need to fix first. Starting fluid will never solve or help those problems. It should not be hard to check you key to see if it is sheared out of position. You can also setup a test light to indicate the timing. Clymer manual shows detailed instructions. Perhaps the points have shifted out of position. Try unscrewing the spark boot from the wire and trim off about 1/4 ". Then screw boot back on. |
