It might not be that complicated of a problem.
You seem to be hung up on the stator.
That would be one of the last places I would look because it's difficult to get at, it's expensive, it's tough to find. Electrical problems don't fix themselves. The light is either on or it's burned out. There is no way the light bulb will "suddenly work".
This sounds like a broken wire or a bad ground connection.
My money is on a broken high tension lead on the coil.
Here read this one, it gave me fits for a long time:

If you're electrically inclined (I'm not) then meter everything.
