I have a question: will an Engine from a 1979 fL250 work in my 1984 FL250? We're they the same for the entire production run? Will the jug and head be the same? Will the '79 jug work with my 84 crankcase and piston?

Far as I know the cylinders were the same, if their was any differences it will still work and interchange, as for the piston yes if its the same and correct bore size for the cylinder your using.

Your a 250 owner have you read this yet? http://www.pilotodyssey.com/billtips.htm
