I had several issues on a recent motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) rebuild involving 2 non matching case halves. Non matching meaning 2 cases from 2 separate motors.Well documented in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=8862" .".." .".." .".." .".." .".. Here are some pictures of the cases mated together.See how they are not matching well at all. Shelf hardening of matching cases and torquing of the cases together as a pair helps in mating the surfaces together. When you take a case and use it with another case, youre going to find this issue at times.I would recommend checking the dowels in the cases and lapping on a LEVEL table, believe me I did it wrong and it was a pain in the arse. Here is some pictures of 2 cases that do not mate well, both are from 2 different engines.

Here is a picture of a dowel removed from those cases. Now mind you I did some of this damage taking it out, but not all of it.You must check the dowels, and alignment holes in the cases to make sure they are clean, and the dowels themselves are round and clean of burrs, etc.In this case you can see the alignment of them has to be caused from dowels not properly checked.

Yes, but there was still issues with the surfaces being truly flat. I had to send them to SPEEDCHASER for milling as I lapped them on my lapping table that unknown to me was hit and caused a uneven condition. |
