It's like this. I bought a used starter from someone. Since it was used, and the starter is a PIA to remove from the buggy I opened it up for inspection.

It had a fair amount of oil inside,

The roller bearing was grinding

And the brush contacts on the armature were already turned down a lot. So much so, the copper was chipping away on 2 of the segments.

So I'm not going to waste my time installing it just to replace it again in the near future.
