So this may get a little long of a read, but want to cover everything for the new potential buyer so they know everything before purchasing and have a ton of pictures. Time has come to sell my 1989 Honda Pilot as I’m looking to go in a different route with a new side by side that is a two seat 4X4. Always wanted a Pilot since first seeing one at the dealer when they first came out, but couldn’t afford the $4,995 price tag at the time. I believe this to be a low hour machine due to the condition and also tracked it back to me being only the third owner since new. It was originally purchased at Honda of Oklahoma City then on to the second owner in Illinois. It ran good when I first got it but just didn’t have that 2 stroke zip, so decided to tear it down and go through the whole thing so it was ready for the 2015 summer riding season. When I say torn down……I mean torn down right to the frame with mostly everything gone through. This is a very clean straight machine with no bends, cracks or damage to the frame or suspension parts. The frame has its original paint and stickers with only some scratches here and there with just a couple of minor rust spots on the bottom of the frame near the Engine. It has all new plastics and stickers…….yes it has all new plastics so they are in great shape beside some faint surface scratches. This has total of 7.4 hours on it since it was totally gone through. Also included with the sale along with a bunch of other thing that will be listed will be another set of NIB front and rear fenders, NIB side panels, NIB floor tub and sticker kit.

First off it needed a top end rebuild due to low compression being around 130psi. The cylinder is on the stock original 80mm bore and only needed a very light hone and a mean a very light hone done at a machine shop. It has a brand new Honda OEM 80mm piston, rings, wrist pin, writs pin bearing and clips. Yeah, a brand new OEM Honda top end and you don’t even want to know what that cost me. Also have another set of new Honda OEM 80mm rings to go in when needed in the future. Compression is now between 151 to 152psi when checked three times after proper heat cycle brake in and passing leak down test. Along with the top end rebuild it received a complete carburetor rebuild with new reeds and gaskets. It also passed the fuel pump volume check. Gas tank is as clean as day one with no rust inside at all and no leaks or smell of gas when riding or sitting. After rebuild only ran Premium non-ethanol fuel and Maxium 2 cycle oil at 32:1.
The transmission was fine so didn’t mess with it besides popping the rear axles shafts out during the tear down and regreasing the splines when reassembled. Axles came right out of trans with no rust or corrosion on any of the splines……inner or outer. CV boots are still soft with no rips, tares or leaks.

The suspension was all taken off and repainted by a buddy at an auto body shop, not just rattle caned. The rubbers ends and ball joints were taped off for a clean factory look. All of the ball joints are tight and wear greased thought the top of the rubber boot before reassembly. The control arm bearings were all cleaned, greased and reassembled after being painted. Seals in the control arms looked like new when disassembled so just cleaned them up and reused them. Shocks have no leaks and rubbers are good with no dry rot, cracking or splits.

The brakes in the front were upgraded to a disc brake conversion that is way better than the stock drum brakes……no worries about mud and water junking up the disc brakes like drums. The spindles were not cut to install the disc conversion like it states in the instructions so it can be switched back to stock drum brakes with retaining all of the four original mounting bolts to the backing plate. It just needed a little grinding around one of the mounting hole to get the caliper to fit……have pics. Wheel bearings were pressed out of the drums and pressed into the new hubs with new seals. It has custom Stainless Steel braided brake line front and rear, but still uses the original hard tube brake lines on the chassis. Both front and rear masters have new rebuild kits as the masters were really nasty when doing the brake swap. Rear brake caliper worked just fine and just needed a cleanup and regrease. It has new pads and the parking brake works. The bearing in the rear suspension spindles were good so no replacement bearings were needed.

The steering column was disassembled and regreased. Steering is tight with straight steering arms and no play in the tie rods. All dash lights, headlight switch and Engine run switch work on the steering wheel. The wrist restraints are in good shape but could use a dye blue. There is an aftermarket steering dampener that helps with the bump steer and can be adjusted to how stiff you would like. A new choke cable was installed as the old one the plastic screw mounting part was broken. It has the original tool kit along with the belt changing bolt.
The cooling system works 100% with no leaks. The fan kicks on and off when it needs to with no problems. It has new silicone radiator hosed on the Engine and a new radiator cap. Overflow bottle is in excellent shape and not brittle from age and heat.

The exhaust has a new manifold gasket, pipe gasket and springs. It also has a new pipe to muffler gasket. There are no leaks anywhere in the exhaust.

Seat is in excellent shape with no rips or tears and the vinyl seat cover is still soft. Harness is in great shape with nice original neck pad.

Here is a list of all of what is included with the sale or is on the Pilot already.

This Pilot is a blast to drive and gets a ton of looks whenever I take it Upnorth to ride the trails. It was a pain to get it registered due to being an older Honda, but it is register as a UTV in Wisconsin and stickered for the trail system. The only down side is that I do not have a title, but I do have a “Bill of Sale” from the previous owner and I did do a VIN check before I even bought it and it is clean. Plus the DNR did another VIN check at the time of registration with it coming up clean again. I did contact Honda of Oklahoma City and they told me that indeed they sold it and gave me the original purchase person’s name and address, but have had no luck in tracking down the original title as he has passed away.

I know what I’ve got into it and don’t really need to sell, but would like to have some money to put down on a new machine and it would just sit even more than it does now. My asking price is $10,000 for everything and not looking to separate the plastics from the Pilot at this time and want to sell it all as a complete package. Look at the pictures and you will see for yourself that this is indeed one clean Pilot that has had a lot of restoration work done to it with a lot of extras. Everything works as it should and it even has all of the correct bolts, nuts and what not for it.....if it was missing I purchased the correct replacement part. I know it’s a lot of money and will send any pictures you want and already have a ton that are crisp and clear as I have nothing to hide. Might have forgot something and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

The pictures taken outside was on June 3rd. Didn't want to flood the post with pictures, if you need more can send to you in and e-mail.....I have like 200 pictures.

No arguments here. That's a very very nice machine.
Can't believe you actually got mud on it. If you didn't post the pic of the muddy machine I would have call liar :-) .
Good luck with the sale -- nice machine.

How does everyone get their pilot that clean after getting it dirty? I seriously lack the skill or patience required to get them like that.
Nice Pilot, good luck with the sale

They just photoshop the mud on it. They don't actually ride them. Too afraid to get baby dirty. :-)

BLECHE-WITE tire cleaner and hot water is the trick. Rinse as much of the mud off with cold water from a hose with a cone tip, then spray the BLECHE-WITE on everything and use a fuzzy wool wash mitt to rub the grime off just like washing your car. The trick is a hot water rinse washes everything super clean. I have both hot and cold water hose spickets in my garage with a tank-less water heater so I never run out of hot water. Cold water works too, but the hot water is like magic on the rinse. Been using this stuff for year to clean cigarette funk and grime off of pinball and arcade games. Cleans wire harnesses to like new with bright colors back in the wires. This stuff will dry the s*** out of your hands but the end results are amazing......guess you could wear some sissy a$$ gloves if your old lady doesn't like ruff man hands, HaHa.

I ride mine, it's just where we go Upnorth 2-wheel drive just doesn't cut it. There is way too many mud holes on the trails, some are over two feet deep and you can't really go around them as there are trees on both sides of the trails. The Pilot is fine when not so muddy, when riding the rail grade or in the sandy dune areas. We mostly always ride over 150 miles a day and some times will do over 250 if riding North to the UP. The Pilot just doesn't get the fuel mileage to do these kind of rides as there isn't always a place to get gas.....especially late at night and can't always count others to carry gas cans for me as that cut into their cargo space for warm close, food and beer.
