Post subject:  Saving the stock seat on the Pilot.

Like every pilot seat the blue color was starting to fade and look worn. As you could guess I cannot spray well any more. I took a trip down to SoCal last year to visit my family and had my dad spray the seat for me with a PPG type vinal paint in a silver color that matched the a-arms silver. You could pick any color you want. I picked silver because it does not get as hot in the sun as the blue did. I know black would look good too but it would get even hotter. I also had the botom seat support powder coated black. Before it was powder coated I used 80 grit sandpaper and a small file to remove the wield splatter and any sharp edges. This will decrease the chance of paint chipping off of the sharp areas and rusting as it tends to do on these seats. There are so many sharp edges on the seat frame that you should be really careful not to cut yourself on this part while you are working on it.

This PPG paint has held up very well. It has been about a year since it was done and the seat still looks very nice. It has also protected the origional vinal material from continuing to rot. These seats are not replacable anymore and they are over 20 years old. The pictures I am posting below are the origional paint job when it was installed last year and close-ups of the seat now while it was pulled out for the Engine rebuild we just did.

i just did mine in duplicolor blue. the can was for "tuners" lol. a vinyl spray. i will have to see how it will hold up. the blue is almost a perfect match to the unfaded areas my seat had. i will find a link to what i used if there is any interest.

I would also be interested. What type of prep is required to the seat?

Sorry to steal the thread MAS Racing!

The stuff i used is this stuff by duplicolor. I got it at napa, i think it was $10 or so for a can. I got part number HVP102 - Blue, it is one of their "Tuner" colors. As far as prep work, i just cleaned and made sure the seat was free of any grease or dirt and made sure it was dry, and then just started painting the seat. 1 spray can was enough to get the job done, i think i put 2 coats and then just a little more in the seat area where the vinyl was dry and seemed to be soaking up a little more paint. It seems to be holding up very well, although i havent taken it for a ride longer than around the block a couple times. I have been throwing tools in the seat while working on it and it hasnt scratched, cracked or chipped. If i had another seat i would definitely do it again. Being in the spray can it is quite convenient.

It is a lot more work and of coarse more money to use the ppg. It is about $45 a court for the paint and about $25 for the reducer retail. First what I did was use comet clenser with a scotchbrite pad and took my time to clean it. I used dawn dish soap to clean of any residue that is left and any grease that might still be on there. Then wiped it down with lacquer thinner a couple of times. Finally used a tac rag berfore spraying. I have been spraying this stuff for over 20 yrs to restore vehicle door/kick pannels. I tried spay cans years ago but did not have as much luck with them lasting especially fading from the sun. The nice thing about the ppg vinal paint is that it can be tented to any color that you want to match. The nice thing about the spray can would be the cost and the ease of touching it up. Just be carful not to tiger stripe it with dryspray as you are working. If you do know haw to sray it is easier to get that glass smooth spray with the PPG. You only add 10% reducer to spray the PPG. I spray two god coats with a little flash time between. Then I add another 5-10% reducer for the final coat depending on the temp. The hotter it is the more reducer you would need. Overall resultes it looks as if it was just made using brand new material of that color not sprayed. If you cant find PPG both Doupont and Sikkens are just as high quality. I do not have experiencs with other brands.

Nitrosport I hope that the spraycan ends up lasting better than I remember.
